WWE Battleground 2014 Predictions: Jack Swagger vs. Rusev

Rusev's domination of World Wrestling Entertainment since making his in-ring debut the night after WrestleMania XXX has been very impressive, but it was the mic work of Lana, coupled with the real life tension between Russia and the United States, that has helped fuel the character of late and make it one of the most despised in all of WWE.

With every passing week and every dismantling victory, fans wondered when self-professed "Real Americans" Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter would stand up in the face of the Rusev onslaught.

That time came on the June 30 episode of Raw, and the crowd responded quite favorably. After six years spent as a heel, Swagger instantly became a babyface. More importantly, he instantly became one of the most over babyfaces on the roster, proving that something as simple as a patriotic angle still works in today's wrestling landscape.

The promo work by Colter and Lana and the physical encounters between Swagger and Rusev have helped make their rivalry the hottest. As a result, their match at Battleground has become one of the most eagerly anticipated on the card. That anticipation brings with it a fair amount of pressure for Swagger and Rusev to deliver a match befitting of the hype and response.

Prediction: Double count-out

This is one of the most difficult matches on Sunday's card to predict.

Swagger and Colter have gotten over so strong as babyfaces that sacrificing that heat on a C-level event such as Battleground would be a mistake. At the same time, ending Rusev's undefeated streak via disqualification or count-out would be a disappointing way to conclude something fans are finally buying into.

Thus, the most effective finish for Sunday's match would be a double count-out.

Would it be satisfying? Absolutely not. But it would allow for the program to continue on for another match, leading to a much more high-profile match at SummerSlam.

The work of all of the talented people involved has earned them the right to continue their program. If the writing staff can continue to craft the quality of segments that it has to this point, crowds will continue to reward them with the loud, raucous responses that they have enjoyed thus far.

Jack Swagger Battles the Rosebuds

Vignettes for Adam Rose have been airing on Raw for weeks. Fans of NXT will be familiar with the party-mad South African, but his initial appearances on the main roster have been a bit of a disappointment.

He has only showed up thus far to antagonise Zeb Colter and Jack Swagger, now appearing on the former's "Deportation List." On Monday's episode of Raw, he cost Swagger his match with Rob Van Dam.

This story is pointing toward a clash between Swagger and Rose at Payback. Swagger is a great worker, and fans could warm to Rose if they are able to see what he can do between the ropes.

It is sure to be an interesting clash and could cement Adam Rose as a worthy member of the main roster in WWE.

WWE SmackDown 4/25/14 Result: The Great Debate: Paul Heyman and Zeb Colter

You know WWE's creative team is on fire when it even manages to book a debate flawlessly.

The brilliance in the segment came from the fact that one man told the truth throughout, while the other used a past accomplishment to try and downplay what his rival was saying.

Zeb Colter told the truth, relayed facts and warned Cesaro about Paul Heyman's long history of telling lies. "He would rather climb a tree and tell a lie than stand on the ground and tell the truth," he told the Swiss Superstar in regard to Heyman.

The former ECW owner shot back at Colter with the one phrase that fans have been hearing nonstop since April 7. "My client, Brock Lesnar, conquered the Streak," he announced repeatedly, never once giving any legitimate answer to counter any of Colter's valid points.

His knock against Swagger for never winning was fun, harsh and true all at the same time, and the pull-apart scuffle between Heyman and Colter got the crowd into the ordeal. But it was Heyman completely shooting down anything Colter said with his braggadocio reminders about Lesnar defeating the Undertaker that really elevated the segment from good to great.

It should be interesting to see if Cesaro finds out over time just how right Colter was and just how shady, sneaky and untrustworthy Heyman really is.

WWE SmackDown 4/25/14 Result: Cesaro vs. Jack Swagger

While wrestling may not have been prevalent on this week's show, the opening match of the evening was a stellar, hard-hitting and hard-fought battle between Real American tag partners Cesaro and Jack Swagger.

Cesaro utilized  uppercuts to his advantage, while Swagger repeatedly tried for the Patriot Lock, which the Swiss Superstar was able to counter. The Cesaro Swing stunned Swagger, and the Neutralizer finished him off as a joyful Paul Heyman watched at ringside.

Cesaro's win seemingly ends the program between him and Swagger, but with the vendetta between Colter and Heyman looking far from over and the Extreme Rules pay-per-view coming up in a matter of days, do not be surprised to see a rematch of sorts, perhaps even including the managers.

WWE Smackdown 2/21/14 Result:The trials of Bryan

This week's SmackDown kicked off a lot like Monday's Raw did, with Daniel Bryan being forced to compete in two matches, thanks to Director of Operations, Kane.

Bryan defeated Jack Swagger in a good match to start the night's festivities. Then, at the behest of SmackDown general manager Vickie Guerrero and Kane, it was announced that he would take on one of his five opponents at Elimination Chamber this Sunday night, Cesaro.

WATCH: WWE Smackdown 2/21/14

The two former Ring of Honor standouts had a tremendous match that ended in disqualification when the Big Red Monster interjected himself in the contest just moments after Bryan caught Cesaro with the running knee to the face.

WATCH: WWE Smackdown 2/21/14

For the second time this week, Bryan found himself on the receiving end of a chokeslam.

All signs seem to point to a Bryan-Kane feud that will continue to play out over the coming weeks. While the program makes sense given their history together, one has to hope that the goat-faced Superstar will be involved in something more meaningful come WrestleMania.

WWE Raw Results 2/17/14 Kofi Kingston vs. Jack Swagger

Jack Swagger burst into action as the bell rang, clocking Kofi Kingston in the corner. Kingston tried to pull one of his trademark high-flying moves, but Swagger caught him and suplexed him to the mat.

The No. 1 contender for the Intercontinental Championship dominated the match until Kingston hit a missile dropkick.

Kingston's speed earned him the advantage for a few moments.

He hit the SOS, but the three-count didn't hold as Swagger's foot was on the rope. Swagger soon clamped on Kingston's ankle and forced him to tap.

Big E, scheduled for action after Swagger, entered and stared his Elimination Chamber foe down. The Real American ducked out of the ring and retreated.

Result: Swagger wins via submission.

WATCH: WWE Raw 2/17/14 (Full Episode)

Nothing much to store in the memory bank from this one, but it's smart to give Swagger some momentum here but, at the same time, give Kingston the near-win as well.

There wasn't an electric energy to the Swagger and Big E staredown, largely because they have not had any buildup to this point.

World Heavyweight Champion Dolph Ziggler vs. Alberto Del Rio vs. Jack Swagger - Triple Threat Match | Extreme Rules 2013

Dolph Ziggler will defend his newly won World Heavyweight Championship title against Jack Swagger and Alberto Del Rio in a raging Triple Threat Match at WWE Extreme Rules.

Dolph Ziggler Cash in Money In The Bank Contract on Raw 4/8/13

When Ziggler took an opportunity of an injured Del Rio on Raw (Watch: Part 1/Part 2) after Wrestlemania 29 (Watch: Part 1/Part 2) and cashed his Money in the Bank briefcase and won the World Heavyweight Championship title, when Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter demanded a non title match against Del Rio and attacked The Mexican Superstar's leg viciously.

This situation changed the environment of World Heavyweight title as Ziggler is the current World Champion and Del Rio is entitled to an rematch against Ziggler, on the other hand as Swagger has pinned the reigning champion. So, to conclude things SmackDown's General Manager Booker T decided to an Triple Threat match at Extreme Rules is the ultimate conclusion to settle things.

The Triple Threat match has raise the stack's high not only because he is up against two former World Champions but Ziggler doesn't have to be pinned to lose his title.

Will The World Heavyweight Champion still be victories after Extreme Rules or will he lose his title aginst Alberto Del Rio and Jack Swagger.

WWE Raw 2/18/13 Result: Jack Swagger vs. Daniel Bryan & Wade Barrett Promo/ Rosa+Primo+Epico vs. Tensai+Brodus+Naomi

It's official. The WWE is playing the race card in the world championship match at WrestleMania 29. Swagger, according to Colter, is a real American, a patriot. The champion, Alberto Del Rio, is a foreigner who is here just to take from America, to "reap the rewards of our motherland."

Can't wait to hear how Del Rio, inevitably, responds.

After the speech, Swagger steps into the ring against Daniel Bryan.

Key Quotes: "Tonight is about our country. The state of our union. There's only one man brave enough. One man wise enough. One man honest enough to give it." —Jack Swagger on Zeb.

"The Bill of Rights gives Jack and me the right to stand out here and voice our opinion." —Zeb Colter.

"Real Americans are not to blame. The blame lies solely on the shoulders of the millions and millions of people living in this country illegally." —Colter.

"He's going to reclaim America." —Colter on Swagger's goal for WrestleMania.

"That knees gone." —Zeb Colter on Bryan's injuries during the match.

Grade: Promo: A; Match: A. I love the new Swagger. He works Bryan's injured midsection with no remorse, then does a number on his leg to finish the bout. Bryan is still the best worker in the company and this was a really good match.

Wade Barrett is out to brag about his role in the new Colin Farrell movie Dead Man Down, which doesn't actually look half bad. Must not be a WWE production. Sheamus ruins his fun by revealing that he didn't even have a speaking role.

Next up is the Funkdactyles squashing Primo, Epico and Rosa. WWE continues to build Tensai and Clay as a major comedy act.

Key Quote: "Got to wind it up fella." —Sheamus to Wade Barrett.

"You ruined my special moment." —Barrett.

Grade: Promo: D+. You can't fool me WWE—that was a thinly disguised commercial. Match: C-. Squash. And not a good one.

Update on Jack Swagger's Status with WWE

Speculation has been rampant recently regarding the future of Jack Swagger in WWE.

Reports claim that the former World Heavyweight Champion may be on the verge of quitting the company, after years of terrible treatment at the hands of the booking team.

Wrestlinginc.com has offered an update on this story, writing:

According to a source, there is some truth to the story. Swagger recently informally spoke with Triple H about either a release, or taking some time off.

However, they also go on to note that, despite their shoddy treatment of him for much of his tenure, the company is keen to keep him on their roster. They also note that the feeling is he won't go to TNA (where a lot of ex-WWE wrestlers usually end up):

WWE wants to keep him, and there are those that believe that Swagger does not want to join TNA since TNA pays—in most cases—a third of what WWE pays. Also, no one backstage is really talking up TNA as being a great place to work, and Christian has been very vocal to this day about how miserable he was there.

Interestingly, over at her official Twitter account, model and former FCW Diva Catalina White, Swagger's wife, flat-out denied that Jack had asked for his release, calling the story "absolutely not true."

Regardless of whether or not Swagger has asked for his release, hopefully in the future WWE can move to utilize him better. After all, he's a talented wrestler with decent promo skills and a funny "arrogant athlete" gimmick that fans appreciate. With a little time and effort, the company could surely rebuild him and turn him into a solid upper/mid-card act.

Can Jack Swagger Regain Prominence by Taking a Hiatus from WWE?

Over the last two years, Jack Swagger has fallen so dramatically and thunderously from grace, it’s now almost impossible for many fans to remember he was once a world-title holder.

Yes, Jack Swagger, lowly jobber, once held the World Heavyweight Championship, one of the most prestigious belts in the industry.

Granted, his title reign in mid-2010 didn’t exactly set the world on fire (although he did have some very good matches with Rey Mysterio on television and pay-per-view), but his abysmal treatment since then is still completely mystifying.

Since then, he’s been reduced to a lame lower-card comedy act and, overall, been treated shoddily by the booking team—that is, when they’re not outright ignoring him and leaving him off of Raw or SmackDown.

More embarrassing, the likes of Michael Cole and Dolph Ziggler have poked fun at his status as a former World Heavyweight Champion on television, reminding fans of how foolish him ever being champion was in the first place.

Swagger’s treatment is even more puzzling when we consider that, on paper, at least, he’s everything Vince McMahon and WWE could want in a star—he has a tall, muscular physique, a decent amount of personality and solid in-ring skills. Still, the company refuses to do anything meaningful with him.

Per the storyline, Swagger himself has gotten fed up with the badly floundering act—after his short, embarrassing loss to Sheamus, he walked out of the company at last week’s Raw.

By the looks of it, he’s taking a hiatus while WWE attempt to repackage him and salvage his career. He may resurface again on Raw in a few months, or go over to SmackDown for a cleaner slate.

So Jack is taking some time off. But will this help him regain prominence in the company that has treated him as a laughingstock for so long? It’s difficult to say.

On one hand, his career has fallen to such low depths, it’s difficult to see how any new gimmick—even an awful one—could hinder him even more.

At this point, doing anything with Swagger will be a huge improvement, considering he’s been ignored for so long.

The hiatus itself will also be good for the wrestler’s career. The Miz struggled earlier this year, as he slumped down the card amid loss after loss, until he took time off to film The Marine: Homefront for WWE Studios. Upon his return, complete with a new look and attitude, The Miz regained his momentum and is currently going through a career renaissance of sorts.

Sadly, it’s also possible that the damage has already been done to Swagger and nothing can regain his credibility in the eyes of the WWE fans.

In this case, maybe Swagger should step back from the company and assess his options in the industry. TNA, with their well-known fondness for bringing in WWE names, may like to sign him if he became free.

He could also follow the lead of MVP, another WWE mid-carder who grew frustrated with the stalling state of his career, and try to revive his career in Japan.

But WWE should at least make the effort to rehab his flagging career. After all, with the depleting state of the roster these days, they can’t afford to lose any more promising young talent.

Additionally to go with, Meantime Raw GM John Laurinaitis announced he would be the unique referee. For Punk, the Royal Rumble provides the ability not only to put the loudmouth competition in his position, but also to continue to be under the epidermis of Mr. Laurinaitis. For Dolph Ziggler, the Rumble allows the WWE’s person showoff the opportunity to convert terms into activities and move out of St. Louis with the WWE Championship. However, after CM Punk overcame Jack Swagger on WWE Raw SuperShow, Vickie Guerrero and Jack Swagger will be suspended from ringside.

Perhaps the most egregious affront to 'The Straight Edge Superstar’s well-being during the course of the past month came during the last Monday Night Raw of 2011. Mean while, Raw GM John Laurinaitis, The Second Town Deliverer experienced an constant fight in his home Chicago. In the second of three title-free Gauntlet Match planned by Laurinaitis, Punk faced Ziggler after beating Jack Swagger just minutes after defeating him.

After an regrettable distraction from Raw’s GM, Ziggler hit a dangerous Zig Zag, pinned Punk and temporarily silenced The Voice of the Voiceless. Furthermore, in accordance Ziggler's style, took the WWE Championship.

On the first Monday Night Raw of 2012, the WWE Universe got another look of Punk vs. Ziggler — now for the WWE Title. However, instead of a major end to this newbie competition, stress ramped up due to a Mr. Laurinaitis producing the WWE Champ to be mentioned out. Now these two open Personalities will battle in St. Louis on Earnings 29th at the Noble Rumble with the Management Vice Chief executive of Ability Operations and Raw's Meantime GM in the center, increasing both rivalries to new levels.

CM Punk vs Dolph Ziggler - WWE Championship Match - WWE Raw

Will Mr. Laurinaitis continue to be reasonable and imparitial? Can Punk put his Royal Rumble challenger to rest and maintain his headline when it issues most? Or will the WWE Universe have to get used to reading a whole lot more boasting by Ziggler (and, by proxies, his extremely oral and intensely engaged supervisor, Vickie Guerrero) in 2012?

Q and A with WWE Superstar Jack Swagger

Q: Obviously, you went to the University of Oklahoma, but you originally went to play football there right?
A: I graduated high school in 2001 and I received a full scholarship to play a Division 1 football for the Sooners. I was on their team for three years; we went to the Rose Bowl, Cotton Bowl and the Sugar Bowl. At the end of my third year, their heavyweight for the wrestling team became academically ineligible for the second half of their season and they had no backup. So I ended up finishing out the season for them, while still playing football, and at the end of that season, my third year at school, I switched over to wrestling full time.
I wrestled four years for them, including that half season. So, it was three [years of] football, four [years of] wrestling. It sounds like a lot but I was there for five.

Q: Were you a WWE fan growing up and did you ever think you'd be a WWE Superstar?
A: Never in my wildest dreams as a kid did I think I'd be a WWE Superstar. Still today, when we go out in do shows in front of the crowd and we do shows, it blows my mind that I'm lucky enough and this is what I do for a living. It's pretty awesome. As a kid, I was a fan of any type of wrestling, I started wrestling when I was five, and whatever form I could get my hands on whether it was freestyle, collegiate, or even pro in the back yard on the trampoline. I was all over it.

Q: Who was your favorite wrestler as a kid?
A: You know I'm an Oklahoma boy, I gotta stay true. Danny Hodge [a three-time NCAA Division I champion wrestler and professional wrestler] was a big influence as a kid, his legend just kind of creeps around Oklahoma. He was an idol to me and he lived not far from me. I was the same age as his grandson and we started wrestling together and he helped me a lot early on.

Q: How has your amateur background played into your training for the WWE?
A: When I was first recruited to the WWE and was in their developmental system for 2 and a half years, mainly under Dusty Rhodes, Steve Keirn and Dr. Tom Pritchard, I felt like my amateur background really helped me prepare physically and mentally for what I was trying to give the WWE. Mentally, you know to go through the training and stay dedicated and determined to your training and to keep focused on it even when you've got a small crowd and it's really hot outside or something, you've gotta push through it. The physical part of it really was the easiest part for me. I thought I excelled very well at learning the techniques and the proper maneuvers to be safe out there as well as entertaining. Man, it really put me light years in front of other people, I thought.

Q: So do you still use a lot of those skills in the ring now?
A: Yup, I use a lot of the same movements and skills in the ring. A little more transitioned into this style to make them bigger, larger than life, but a lot of it you'll see in my training. I still do a lot of my same amateur training to keep my body in shape and keep me prepared for the top level Superstars that we have.

Q: Who came up with the name Jack Swagger?
A: It was a combination of me and WWE Creative. Honestly, they just came to me one day and based on my personality said ‘You're Jack Swagger.' And at the time, it was just 2008 before all the hit pop songs and rap songs came out with Swagger in them. I thought it was really cool and really exciting. To this day I still say when you hear swagger, that's about Jack Swagger, the All-American American.

Q: So how much the guy you see on TV is the real Jake Hager [Swagger's real name]?
A: What you see on TV is, of course, a television character, the All-American American. It's a definitely a large part of Jake Hager, but not the whole part. What we do, what we try to do, in order to make our characters believable and entertaining, is you've got to make them part of you. So 90 percent of my personality you see on TV with that remaining 10 percent that added TV character.

Q: You've developed quite a rivalry with Evan Bourne as of late. Can you talk about working with him a little bit?
A: Definitely. I know July 24 we'll be coming to Upper Marlboro and it's always an exciting match, whether I want it to be or not. (Laughs.) I always have to ground and pound with him because if you get him roaring and let him fly around a little bit, he can really do some damage to any competitor. We have a rivalry going, I don't fell like it's really started or taken off to where it could go. I know I need to teach him a couple lessons as far as respect goes. I don't think he'll ever learn that from me, but every time we're in the ring together, it's gonna be magic.

Q: How did things change for you after you won Money in the Bank and then the World Championship last year?
A: It was awesome. It was a monumental feat. Once you're a world champion, you're always a world champion and to put those two words besides your name, it really is humbling to say it out loud. It changed a lot of things in my life; it changed my perspective toward things and how I handled myself. You really can't put it into words what it means; it's different for every person. But, it was a lifelong dream, and at the same time, it's just the tip of the iceberg because it makes me want more. I want more world championships. Once you have a taste for it, it's like a shark in the water smelling blood. You gotta go for it and you gotta give it everything or you're going to come short.

Q: What did you learn from being the champion and being the top guy on the show?
A: Man, there's so much [I learned] not only being the top guy, but working with the other top guys and getting their mindsets and perspectives. That really is the goal right there. What I learned in those 78 days as World Champion was truly was phenomenal. It felt like 10 years of experience I digested and took from these people. It was truly an honor to work with those top guys and to take any lesson they could teach me.

Q: So speaking of those top guys, you've only been in WWE a few years, but you've worked with a lot of the big names already - Cena, Orton, Edge, Triple H, Rey Mysterio, even Undertaker - who was your favorite person to work with so far?
A: All of them. When you are working at that level, that's what you're going for. You want to be in the main event. You want to transcend your generation of wrestlers. You want, 20 years from now, people to say the All-American American Jack Swagger was a great WWE Superstar and to work with them, it's an honor and a lot of fun.

Q: Any one match in particular stand out?
A: Off the top of my head, as a World Championship match, me and Undertaker had the fourth largest live wrestling crowd in 2010 in Mexico City, so that added a lot to the match and the fact it was the Undertaker and the first time I was wrestling him. It was huge; it was phenomenal to have that many people around. It stands out, I'd say.

Q: Any other Legends you'd want the opportunity to work with?
A: You know, just 'cause I find his tweets very funny, that's the Iron Sheik. He's a former amateur wrestler, I'm a amateur wrestler, let's lock horns and see who comes out on top, you know what I'm saying.

Q: I've read some people compare you to Kurt Angle, and I think Angle himself did an interview where he addressed that. What do you think of those comparisons?
A: I mean, honestly, I'm a big fan of Kurt. He's one of the reasons I wanted to wrestle, I admired him as an amateur wrestler and admired him even more as a professional wrestler. To be compared to him, it's an honor, but at the same time, I think both of us are different people and different wrestlers. It might be apples to oranges, but at the same time it's nice to be in that category.

Q: Last one, will Jack Swagger always be a bad guy in the WWE, or do you think there's going to be a time when the fans are cheering you?
A: With a name like the All-American American, how can you not cheer? It just rolls off the tongue so nice. That's the great thing about the WWE you never know what to expect. We like to deliver a great show and give you something you've never seen every time out the gate, so you never know.

Jerry Lawler vs. Michael Cole at WWE Over the Limit 2011

Michael Cole can certainly boast about the silly undefeated streak he maintains by facing WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler, but the sniveling announcers competition with The King has never really been about wins and losses. Considering that, the start, its represented all about embarrassment. From insulting Lawlers late mother to mistreating his close friend Jim Ross, Cole has performed almost everything in his meager power to take down his longtime broadcast co worker. But all the backstabbing and name calling will come to a head at WWE Over the Limit when the two competitors encounter one more time with Lawler's Hall of Fame-hood in the equilibrium Cole's for the taking.

Cole and Lawler always have switched over spoken pokings in the announce stall, but matters became physical on the Nov. 29 edition of Raw when the fearful Cole cost The King his WWE Championship Match up against The Miz. It was a thornless motion, but the self proclaimed "Spokesperson of WWE" was unrepentant regarding his actions. In the weeks that came after, the blusterer constantly junked Lawler while hiding from his rival inside a particularly built stall he nicknamed "The Cole Mine."

It was all very exacerbating to the WWE Hall of Famer, but Lawler ultimately acquired the chance to close his challengers mouth at WrestleMania XVII when the dual gentlemen encountered in a round functioned by "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. By using a unsafe Jack Swagger following his back, Cole came in the ring overconfident as always and was snapped to shreds by The King. Right after the pipsqueak tapped out to an ankle lock, it appeared as though justice had been served well. So therefore, at the final minute, the anonymous Raw GM relayed a message claiming Cole the winner via disqualification a consequence of Austin becoming personally active in the action.

Watch: WWE Wrestlemania 27- Michael Cole def. Jerry "The King" Lawler

Part 1

Part 2

Eventhough he was technically the victor, Cole should have been humiliated by the brutal whipping he experienced. Or else, he only developed more egomaniacal. Openly boasting his undefeated WrestleMania streak, the sleazeball went as far as to announce himself royalty and even took part in a bogus knighting ceremony while Raw was in London. If server has gone away that server has gone away wasnt server has gone away disgusting server has gone away enough server has gone away , server has gone away Cole server has gone away and server has gone away his server has gone away flunky server has gone away Swagger server has gone away beat down server has gone away Lawlers server has gone away old server has gone away friend server has gone away Jim server has gone away Ross server has gone away after server has gone away the server has gone away enthronement server has gone away and server has gone away pressured server has gone away him server has gone away to server has gone away kiss server has gone away Coles server has gone away feet server has gone away . server has gone away.

That awful routine concluded in a Country Whipping Match pitting Cole & Swagger facing Lawler & J.R. at Extreme Rules on May 1. Once again, Coles flabby, pale physical structure was soured black and blue by his annoyed challengers and their leather whips. And once again he pulled off to worm his out with a triumph when he rolled up a diverted Ross for the gain.

Relying on his ego at an all time in high spirits, Cole proceeded to showboat like a man who in reality accomplished something. The disrespect was too much for The King to select and the challenge for a hit at Over the Limit was shed down, yet if it was to mean giving up his Hall of Fame ring to Cole in the consequence he'd lose.
