Seth Rollins, Authority Need to Be Revived by a Randy Orton Swerve at Payback

For the past couple of months, the Authority has been nothing but Seth Rollins and Kane portraying the little brother playing big brother's video games without his permission. It did not take long for these weekly quarrels to get annoying and difficult to witness.

Although Rollins has a future ahead of him, Kane is without a major direction, and the "Director of Operations" title is simply the same thing as saying, "Glen, we do not have much for you, but we'll place you here for now." Unfortunately, since he has removed the mask, his interest has diminished by the second.

Concerning Rollins, having him win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania produced good shock factor but certainly rolled the dice on whether it was premature or not. Moreover, pushing someone prematurely always has the opportunity to backlash, especially when the person has neither found his niche nor truly developed as a character yet. Rollins, unfortunately, has become a victim of that very complex.

At this point, the weasel-like, slimy, J&J Security-endorsed Rollins is not a top guy, and there is nothing that protrudes "box office" about him. Even his reaction from the smark crowds have faded, and he is receiving more boos universally. Rollins is in dire need of a reset button, as we have seen that he is not a big draw as the face of the company with his current gimmick.

The road to reinventing Rollins should start at Payback. The Authority angle is barely running on fumes now and desperately needs some fuel to build more steam. The fact that the Authority still exists is not the greater issue here. Similar to The Corporation, a top heel entity is beneficial to develop stars. Names such as Steve Austin, The Rock and Mankind all benefited from being public enemy number one to the authority while defying the odds and emerging on top by becoming world champion.

Rollins needs that same rite of passage.

At Payback, a swerve must take place to both revive Randy Orton as well as reinvent Rollins. Orton aligning himself once again with the Authority would not only inject interest in the faction, but it would set up the Orton vs. Lesnar bout at SummerSlam that has been a dream match for many as well as give Rollins the opportunity to face Triple H at SummerSlam in a much-needed match to officially place him on the main event map.

Otherwise, if Payback is what many are expecting, we will get more of Rollins being a weasel, more of Orton being an irrelevant, spot-filling babyface and more of Kane arguing—and surely nobody wants any more of that.

Randy Orton Has Revived His Career with the Roman Reigns Feud

Following Triple H's announcement on Monday's Raw that Randy Orton and Roman Reigns will face off at the SummerSlam pay-per-view on August 17, it feels like time to reflect on how this feud has revived Orton's career.

Indeed, for the first time in a while, something The Viper is doing on WWE programming feels like a relevant, important part of the show.

One reason for this is that it is a new feud. Fans have had to sit through Orton taking on guys like John Cena, Kane and Daniel Bryan too many times to count. No wonder his character suffered.

This current program, meanwhile, is fresh—Reigns and Orton have never had a lengthy singles feud together before. It's not another dull repeat.

Crucially, this feud has greatly rejuvenated Orton's character.

Since turning heel at last year's SummerSlam and joining with The Authority, the star has struggled to really hit his stride as a bad guy.

Even with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, he mostly just came off as Triple H's henchman. Nor did he shine in his average feuds with Cena or Bryan.

The booking was mediocre, sure, but a large part of the blame could be placed on Orton's shoulders. His interviews often came off as flat, dull and one-dimensional. His attempts at acting in backstage segments with Triple H and Stephanie McMahon left a lot to be desired too.

As a wrestler he's phenomenal, but he appears to have always battled more with the personality side of things.

This storyline with Reigns, however, has made his character genuinely interesting again for the first time in years. Per the storyline, the former Shield member costing Orton a title shot at SummerSlam has sent the star completely over the edge—to the point he has become more dangerous, violent and erratic than ever before.

The best example of this is the lengthy beating an outraged Orton delivered to Reigns on last week's edition of Raw. With some help from Kane, Orton managed to subdue the new star and violently throw him into everything in sight at ringside.

The ranting, raving Orton then managed to RKO Reigns through the announcers' table. (Although it took a couple of tries for it to break; this must have been really painful for poor Reigns.)

This stunningly brutal, show-stealing segment was a great reminder of Orton's superb 2007 run as a killer heel—and a reminder of the truly wonderful things he's capable of when booked correctly.

You have to wonder why WWE scripted him to get into useless backstage squabbles with Kane or Triple H for months and months when he's clearly far better off as a dominant, sadistic heel who wants to decimate anyone who gets in his way.

His promo work on Raw on Monday night—he passionately vowed to destroy Reigns—was also very strong and helped put the pay-per-view bout over.

Of course, I shouldn't get too ahead of myself. It's still early yet. It's possible the two won't click in their match at SummerSlam. Who knows what can happen?

But right now it looks like the feud with Reigns has turned things around for Orton in a big way.

WWE Battleground 2014 Predictions: WWE Title Match: John Cena vs. Roman Reigns vs. Kane vs. Randy Orton

At Money in the Bank, Cena captured his 15th heavyweight championship, much to the dismay of a WWE Universe that has grown tired of his act. Sunday night at Battleground, he will defend that title against The Authority's Randy Orton and Kane and breakout star Roman Reigns in a huge Fatal 4-Way main event.

There has been noticeable tension between Cena and Reigns, who have had several heated staredowns in the weeks leading into the event. The crowd responses to the teased encounter between them have been phenomenal, proving that WWE could have a big-money match on its hand if it chooses to go in that direction.

Over the last two weeks, the attention has turned toward the growing dissension within The Authority, most notably that involving Kane and Orton. It intensified Monday night when Orton dropped the Demon with an RKO, ensuring that the Big Red Monster will have plenty of anger to unleash when the two take to the ring for the Battleground main event.

With one of the biggest shows of the year right around the corner, do not be surprised if the booking helps set up some of the highest-profile bouts on the SummerSlam card.

Prediction: John Cena

There are only two realistic choices to leave Tampa with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Reigns is as hot as any other babyface on the roster and has been accepted with open arms by a fanbase desperate for anything but the neon-wearing champion they have now. A win for him would be the culmination of a tremendous push over the last two months.

The danger of rushing him into a situation he is not prepared for, however, is significant and could result in the irreparable damage.

That brings us to the aforementioned neon-wearing champion, who is the unquestioned face of WWE and the company's resident "Superman." When faced with tremendous adversity, he always manages to come out with his head held high and his arm raised higher.

With the timing not right for Reigns and no chance of Orton or Kane winning the gold, Cena should retain and enter SummerSlam with the top prize in professional wrestling for the second consecutive year.

Will Randy Orton Overcome at Money in the Bank Ladder Match

WWE can enter another Randy Orton world title reign with confidence. He has certainly been in this position before, winning a total of 12 world championships in his career.

He's a reliable top heel, able to work standout matches against just about anyone. His mic skills are underrated as well. While not an elite mic worker, he can effectively irk the crowd with his arrogance as he proved in early 2014 and for much of his career.

Orton has faded from prominence lately, becoming a nondescript figure in The Authority's entourage. A win here gets him a bigger share of the spotlight and allows him to return to more autonomous villainy.

An Orton victory will induce deja vu. At last year's event, Orton won the Ladder match at the main event.


In addition, it hasn't even been three months since he lost the title at WrestleMania 30. He won the belt back in October, beginning his eighth reign. "The Viper" spent much of the second half of 2013 either with that championship or as the No. 1 contender.

Beyond that, though, Orton and John Cena have hovered around the world title scene for years.

Going with Orton once more here is sure to inspires a lot of sighs. It would be the latest resume booster for a man with a bloated one.

One also has to wonder how thrilling his upcoming title match options would be. Seeing Daniel Bryan take him on once he returns has little spark. It's a pairing WWE has to let rest for a long while. Orton vs. Cena at Battleground or SummerSlam lacks freshness as well.

Examining How Randy Orton Can Return to Relevance in WWE

Even the most diehard Randy Orton fan would have to admit that the man’s stock has fallen considerably over the last six months.

Oh, he’s still relevant. His association with Triple H and spot in Evolution ensure that.

But, really, the days of him being one of the top stars—and a centerpiece—of the show seem to be long gone. John Cena, Daniel Bryan, Seth Rollins and even Roman Reigns all appear to be above him in the pecking order these days.

Is there anyone for the 34-year-old to turn things around?

Well, he does have some options. It just depends on whether he’d be willing to do them and/or WWE would be willing to make the effort to carry them out.

One potential idea is to turn him back babyface.

When Orton turned heel at last year’s SummerSlam, many fans were relieved. The naturally arrogant Orton always seemed like a better bad guy anyway, and his character change, along with new connection to The Authority, would likely open up many new opportunities for him.

Alas, it didn’t really work out that way. His feud with Daniel Bryan may have produced decent matches, but it delivered mediocre buyrates, per Wrestling Inc.

Nor did anyone care much about his Survivor Series pay-per-view match with The Big Show. That also had a terrible buyrate, by the way.

Booking the 2,478th Cena-Orton feud at the end of 2013 was also a big mistake on WWE’s part. The hugely negative—and downright embarrassing—reaction from the fans at the Royal Rumble to the pair’s title match said it all.

Since then, he has held a spot in Evolution but has played second fiddle to Triple H. More recently, he’s found himself upstaged by new member Rollins too, as his shock heel turn takes the spotlight.

Make no mistake about it: Orton’s heel turn has not been a success. Is it time to make him a babyface again? I think WWE should at least consider it.

Another idea is for The Viper to remain a heel but simply try to expand his range as a performer a bit more. He’s not a terrible talker by any means, but he isn’t nearly as good on the mic as guys such as Cena or Bryan are.

Honestly, his promo work has been stale for years. Granted, the material from the creative team isn’t great, but that’s no excuse for Orton’s flat and uninspired delivery.

Perhaps the star could consider attending acting or improv classes during his days off? Or hiring an acting couch to help him showcase more of his personality?

It’s worth a shot—because, really, his WWE career is going nowhere right now.

Feud with Triple H Is Only Way to Rehabilitate Randy Orton's Character

SummerSlam 2013 should have been the start of something beautiful.

Randy Orton, after a year of staleness significantly affected his relevancy within World Wrestling Entertainment, cashed in his Money in the Bank title opportunity and defeated Daniel Bryan to capture the WWE Championship. Not only that, he also revealed a business relationship with Triple H and Stephanie McMahon.

As the so-called "Face of the WWE," he would certainly become the company's top heel, its corporate champion and the man fans paid to see get beat. He would unsheathe an all-new viciousness and increased aggression in an attempt to retain the title he had worked so hard to regain. After years as a babyface, The Viper would be unleashed on an unsuspecting WWE Universe.

Or so we thought.

Somewhere along the line, the definition of the "Face of the WWE" became lost in translation. Orton was not the top villain, the guy the entire show revolved around. He was not particularly aggressive, vile or vicious. The fans did not really hate him, nor did they really love him.

Everything that made The Viper so appealing in the first place was stripped away. What fans were left with was a neutered lapdog for The Authority.

The once-proud Orton, who would answer criticisms with a swift, decisive RKO, allowed Triple H and Stephanie to talk down to him. He allowed them to treat him as a petty employee. He lost all his ability to think for himself and whined and complained like a petulant child when things did not go his way.


Worst of all, he became an afterthought.

The Authority sucked any bit of heat away from the character that may have been there, and Orton became a faceless pawn in master game of chess being played by those in power. He was the avatar for Triple H, the man who did the COO's dirty work for the better part of six months, during which he won more than he lost but consistently had the help of others in doing so.

He and the WWE Universe were constantly reminded of these facts by Triple H, who should have been more concerned with protecting the guy he handpicked to be the franchise player.

Now, nearly a year after he turned heel and fell into a deep, dark abyss of irrelevancy, there is only one way to adequately rehabilitate Orton so that fans can take him seriously as a threat rather than The Authority's plaything: a feud with Triple H.

The COO benefited from having Orton under his control because it gave The Authority the bargaining chip that is the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. It also gave the power couple a man who could compete against any Superstar they deemed an enemy without making Triple H lace up a pair of boots and do it himself.


Everything that Orton did was at the service of his bosses. Meanwhile, they pushed him further and further into obscurity for their own benefit.

For Orton to rediscover the edginess, the attitude and persona that made him a huge star in WWE in the first place, he must rid himself of the cause of his downfall. He must put this yearlong stretch—an unmitigated failure—behind him.

He can start by dropping the sledgehammer-toting King of Kings with an RKO and reminding the WWE Universe just who he is—that he is an unpredictable competitor capable of striking at any time and whose demeanor is that of a venomous reptile.

If he does not and settles for being a glorified stooge for the two most powerful people in professional wrestling, he may never recover from the obvious lack of enthusiasm fans have for him at this point. Given his status as a future Hall of Famer and one of the best wrestlers of his generation, that would be a sad state of affairs for The Viper.

WWE Payback 2014: The Shield and Evolution

After overcoming Evolution in a brutal match that had the crowed shouting "This is awesome" at Extreme Rules (Watch). The Shield will now have another chance to stand toe-to-toe with Triple H, Randy Orton & Batista at WWE Payback in a grand rematch.

Since The Shield defeated Evolution they have been put through a lot of disadvantageous situation again and again. On May 5th edition of Raw, then U.S Champion Ambrose lost his title when he was forced by Triple H to defend the title in a 20-Superstar Battle Royal. The match was won by Sheamus, ending Ambrose's 351 days title reigns. Later that night Evolution attacked The Shield win they were in a intense match against The Wyatt Family.

Randy Orton had to bail often as the fight began. Sheamus met him each time he returned to the ring, overpowering the world champ.

That was true even after Orton rammed Sheamus into the ring post.

"The Celtic Warrior" went for his Brogue Kick but caught only the top rope. Orton used that moment to pounce on his foe, hitting him against the ring post once more.

Stomps and headbutts followed.

Sheamus responded by launching himself shoulder-first into the champ. The brawl moved outside, and Orton slammed Sheamus through the announce table.

The referee reached a nine-count before Sheamus rolled back into the ring, more punishment awaiting him.

Sheamus charged back, slugging it out with Orton and smashing his chest with forearm shots. He blocked an RKO attempt before hitting three consecutive backbreakers.

The Shield attacked just as victory seemed certain for the Irishman.

John Cena, Christian and Daniel Bryan joined the fray. The Wyatt Family soon followed, the ring soon a mess of flying fists. Raw closed with everyone still brawling.

Result: Sheamus wins via disqualification.

The intense, dramatic match would have been a fine way to close out Raw. WWE wisely went with the "throw everyone in the ring and watch them fight" method instead.

The collision fans pined to see between The Wyatt Family and The Shield finally happened.

Merging it with the Elimination Chamber foes' own brawl added to the chaos and highlighted the overlap between the two stories. The Shield still have ties to The Authority. Cena has issues with The Wyatt Family.

Fans will be wondering if any of that has an effect on the Chamber-match outcome. Even if it doesn't, ending Raw with such chaos was a fun way to go.

Their match is looking more and more like a glorified squash match. Don't count on Del Rio putting much of a fight as WWE looks to make Batista look unstoppable before WrestleMania.

Why Randy Orton Will Retain His WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Elimination Chamber

For Randy Orton, the storm has come before the calm, as he will prove when he emerges from the wreckage of the Elimination Chamber with his championship still in hand.

His shoddy record against his opponents at the upcoming pay-per-view is just a case of WWE performing sleight of hand. He has been made to look vulnerable only to entice fans of the possibility that someone will dethrone him as he remains the central figure to the championship drama.

In his latest reign, Orton has been portrayed as a snake, but not in the striking predator sense. He's instead characterized as someone who slips away, hides and seems destined to be beheaded only to avoid the sword in the end.

Other men have been the aggressors and the victors since Triple H booked Orton to face each foe that will be after his title at Elimination Chamber.

He's taken on John Cena, Daniel Bryan, Cesaro, Christian and soonSheamus, one by one. "The Viper" is 1-3 in those battles with a chance to go 1-4 if he falls to Sheamus on Monday's Raw.

Even Cesaro, who John "Bradshaw" Layfield and Michael Cole have pegged as the Chamber's dark horse, pinned Orton on the Feb. 14SmackDown with no interference, no flukiness required.



As fans have seen in the past, this is not assurance of Orton's reign ending, but instead evidence that WWE will go with him retaining. Just a month ago, the company was painting Orton as weak, cowardly and ripe to be uncrowned.

He and Cena were to clash over the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at the Royal Rumble.

Much of the programming leading up to that bout highlighted Orton's susceptibility. Kofi Kingston upset the champ on Jan. 13, for example.



The announcers blamed the loss on "The Apex Predator" toying with his prey.

Orton was flustered after suffering the three-count. The immediate narrative focused on Orton's loss rather than Kingston's win. The enraged champion paced around the ring before pouncing on Cena's father.

On the following Monday, Orton lost even more momentum.

Cena interrupted a Kingston vs. Orton rematch and tore into his longtime rival with fists. He soon chased him through the arena before Orton escaped, ducking into a car and peeling out.


WWE pointed the spotlight on his weaknesses before the Rumble, but Orton won at that event, extending his reign as he will at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view.

Weasel-like behavior begetting championship wins is no new thing for Orton. He spent much of last fall earning victories by way of adistraction, referee interference and The Wyatt Family devouring his enemy for him.

Each time, as it is now, the focus has largely been on Orton.

If WWE were set to crown a new champion, the story would be more about that man working to get atop that peak. Instead, it's been Orton who remains on center stage. The story has been about his struggles and his terrible record at Elimination Chamber matches.

The announcers and WWE's Twitter accounts have talked far more about his lack of victories inside that structure than anyone else's Chamber history.

The fact that Orton's winless record is a bigger story than Cena's three wins or Bryan's .500 Chamber record is a strong hint of who will be headed to WrestleMania as champion.

Although technically Orton has a one in six chance of winning, one has to eliminate some of his foes as serious contenders to win. Only the most blindly optimistic Cesaro fans would bet on him winning the title and facing Batista at WrestleMania. The same goes for Christian.

Neither Cesaro vs. Batista or Christian vs. Batista has the marquee feel of a WrestleMania main event. It's unlikely that WWE would go with Sheamus here either with as little as the company has focused on him compared to Orton.

What about Cena or Bryan then?

Cena vs. Bray Wyatt is said to be "a lock" for WrestleMania, perPWInsider, via WrestlingInc.com. That makes sense as it was Wyatt who led the attack on him at the Royal Rumble and later ambushedCena and his partners on Raw.

As for Bryan, it's a safe bet that Kane has something to do with him losing at Elimination Chamber.

For the last few weeks, WWE hasn't told the tale of Bryan getting another shot at championship glory. Instead, there's the story of his old tag team partner attacking him as he did when Orton's gauntlet first began.



Maybe Bryan gets added in a Triple Threat match for WrestleMania, but he's just as likely headed for a final showdown with The Authority, this conflict with Kane serving as a precursor to a match against Triple H.

At least that's what WWE's foreshadowing has pointed to so far.

It has also given fans ample reason to believe that Elimination Chamber will be Orton's chance to have another celebration to end a pay-per-view. All these losses will just make his eventual victory look that much more impressive.

Expect him to be the last man standing regardless of how wobbly his legs are now.

What's Next for Randy Orton and John Cena After Royal Rumble?

For two of World Wrestling Entertainment's most recognizable and decorated Superstars, Sunday's Royal Rumble was the culmination of the latest chapter in their long and storied rivalry, not to mention the beginning of their individual roads to WrestleMania XXX.

In one of the most interesting (for all of the wrong reasons) and eventful WWE title matches in recent memory, champion Randy Orton defeated challenger John Cena to successfully retain his WWE World Heavyweight Championship following interference from the Wyatt Family.

With the biggest show of the year on the horizon and an Elimination Chamber pay-per-view coming up on February 23, the next two months figure to be very busy for the two competitors.

What will those months entail for each Superstar?

Let's take a look.

Cena's post-Royal Rumble activities are far more predictable than Orton's.

On Monday Night Raw, Cena earned the right to compete in the Elimination Chamber match for the WWE championship in four weeks. Joining him in that title match will be champion Orton, Sheamus and Daniel Bryan, with the final two competitors to be revealed at a later time.

At the same time, the enigmatic Wyatt Family remains a thorn in the leader of the Cenation's side, as was evidenced at the end of the six-man tag team main event that capped of Raw.

Expect to see Cena hang around the title picture for at least the next month, all the while dealing with the persistent threat of the Wyatts.

He will likely fall short of accomplishing his goal of capturing his 15th heavyweight title before focusing his full attention on Bray and a WrestleMania match between the two, a match that could very well catapult Wyatt into the stratosphere of main event talent.

The Viper's path to the Showcase of the Immortals is far less clear than his Rumble opponent's.

He is the current WWE world heavyweight champion but will defend his title inside the Elimination Chamber with no promise that he will escape with the title intact. If he does not, that makes his path to WrestleMania a much more difficult one to predict.

If he does, a showdown with former Evolution teammate Dave Batista for the title awaits him on April 6.

Whether that match would be a strictly singles contest or would feature another Superstar such as Daniel Bryan remains to be seen.

Without the title, Orton likely free-falls down the WrestleMania card and competes against a second-tier star such as Sheamus.

The match itself was good and it was worth of being named as the "Main Event". No matter what you think, but it was good to see the end of the match as Orton wins the match at Michaels expenses.

At Night of Champions Bryan and Orton fought an terrific match for the world title. It was a perfect match because Bryan defeated Orton for the belt and the reaction from the crowd was great.

The next night on Raw, Triple H stripped Bryan from the title as the reason he gave was fast count from referee Scoot Armstrong.

The story was awesome.

On 26th August episode of Raw (Watch), Triple H presented the new WWE Champion Randy Orton with an Cadillac Escalade as reward for his loyalty to The Corporation.

Week after week Bryan's popularity seems to grow in the absences on John Cena, along with his signature chant "Yes!".

On the other hand, Orton's main weapon is that he can easily get the fans to hate him as no other WWE Superstar can at his level.

WWE Superstars like Alberto Del Rio, The Shield and Wyatt Family are also hated by the fans, but when they are performing in the ring  - fans value their effort. Fans hate Paul Heyman too but they get entertained by his interaction with CM Punk.

Orton is not a guy who is was handed everything, he has been in WWE for years his resume hold strong on his wins for numerous titles and over various otsuperstars. He has won three World Heavyweight Championship along with seven WWE Championship in his career. He adds it with winning the Tag Team titles with Edge, along with the Intercontinental title and also winning the Royal Rumble 2009 - which made him the legend he is today.

WWE's "The Beard" man invoked his rematch clause only to prove that he is much more than a “solid B-plus,” as Stephanie McMahon suggests, and entering an new era of WWE main eventer's. For that, Bryan has to face WWE’s Apex Predator who won the title at The Biggest Party of the Summer by having McMahon family and Triple H as his back-up.

The rematch was announced at Aug,23 episode of Smackdown (Watch). Bryan wanted to face Orton that night at the blue brand ring, but the imperious Orton holded the match until Sept, 15th at Night of Champions PPV.

Will Triple H, Mr. McMahon or Stephanie McMahon influence this match in anyway as they lack faith in Bryan, as The Viper believes that it's his good luck and Bryan's bad luck and nothing more.

Influences aside, this WWE Championship title match is build up on hatred, bitterness and ego between the champion and the challenger. Both the fighters has faced each other in the past on Raw 6/24/13 (Watch) in a Street Match, which ended with a handshake after The Viper tap out, there is a little room for respect in this rivalry as the WWE title is on the line. Being WWE Chairman, COO and Executive Vice President of Creative on his side, Orton believes that he is the face the company needed.

With the constant support of Triple H and the McMahons will Orton rebel against Bryan. WWE Universe has seen what Bryan is capable of when his respect is on the line. Will Bryan gain what was stolen from him or will Orton continue to be the cooperate champion.

Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan Feud Will Elevate Wade Barrett

The sparks shooting off of Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan during their feud will set Wade Barrett aflame as well.

While Orton's return to villainy and Bryan's trek back to the WWE Championship are the primary elements of this story, Barrett stands to better his position as a corporate lackey and an enforcer. A narrative this big with so many components is sure to have spotlight to share beyond the main rivals.

After losing the Intercontinental Championship to Curtis Axel at Payback, Barrett seemed to be running in place.

He lost to Christian in just over three minutes, to Axel on SmackDown and watched Cody Rhodes and Damien Sandow become the talk of the world title Money in the Bank ladder match. Fans hoping for Barrett's barrage to begin in earnest only experienced disappointment.

Here was a bruising brawler with a nasty attitude, directionless and forced to watch SummerSlam from the sidelines.

As Bryan now attempts to reprise the "Stone Cold" Steve Austin role in a battle against Vince McMahon and WWE's authority figures, Barrett acquires a spot up front in this burgeoning work of theater. WWE can't have Orton and Bryan fight every night, Triple H is semi-retired and Mr. McMahon isn't likely to step into the ring often now that he is 67 years old.

That leaves Barrett some opportunities to fight and, like he did in Dead Man Down, play the muscle.

Sure, it's several steps down from being the head of Nexus, but this is a role that offers Barrett a chance to show off his in-ring skills and be a consistent part of WWE programming in the coming months.

It all started with an attempt to shave Bryan's beard.



McMahon could have chosen anyone to come down and bully Bryan into shaving. It might have sounded like a silly gig at the time, but it has since translated into Barrett taking on the company's hottest star in the ring several times.

Barrett earned a win over Bryan thanks to a fast count by Brad Maddox. He later faced him in a No Disqualification match on SmackDown.



Expect Triple H and McMahon to use Barrett as a thug to keep Bryan from Orton, an obstacle for Bryan to overcome and a means to thrash Bryan backstage without getting their hands dirty. This will do for Barrett what being in The Corporation did for Big Boss Man in the late '90s, namely create an excuse to put him on TV more.

As beneficial as being menacing and unscrupulous is going to be for Barrett, it's the ring time with Bryan that helps him the most.

There are few wrestlers today capable of putting on great matches regardless of their opponent and Bryan is chief among them. Even if Barrett ends up on the losing end several times, every clash with Bryan is a potential Match of the Year candidate.

These two foes showed off their great chemistry at SummerSlam 2011.



Barrett's brawling skills and power made him a fantastic dance partner for Bryan. Their contrast in styles made for a well-paced, memorable match.

Bryan will likely be facing Orton often, but Barrett will get his shots as well. There are likely to be tag matches involving Bryan, Orton, Barrett and whoever Bryan manages to recruit on his side. There are beatings to hand out and to take; expect Barrett to do both.

Being the goon and the stepping stone for a prospect doesn't sound like a promotion, but being a chief player in a rivalry that includes stars with the name recognition of Triple H and Orton can only be beneficial.

It was reported that on WWE.com that Randy Orton was attacked by an audience member when SmackDown was on Tour Live Event in Cape Town, South Africa, this week. Video of the incident was recorded by an fan and he posted to YouTube, which show that Orton was hit from behind. The whole incident is under investigation now. The fan who attached is in jail pending criminal charges. Orton's injuries are still unknown.

Randy Orton's Divorce, The Difficulty of Being a Husband and a WWE Superstar

The WWE life is to marriages what rust is to metal. Randy Orton joins a long list of pro wrestlers who have have a marriage end in divorce, and one can only assume that his career contributed to that outcome.

As TMZ.com reported on Wednesday, Orton and his wife ended their six-year marriage after his now-ex "filed for divorce in March, claiming the marriage was 'irretrievably broken.'"

Samantha Orton's statement about the state of the marriage didn't specifically say that Orton's work was what drove them apart, but being away from home for the majority of the year can't have helped. Orton, like every other WWE Superstar, travels constantly.

Being a part of WWE Raw, SmackDown tapings, Main Event, house shows and pay-per-views has men like Orton living a transitory life.

In July alone, many WWE Superstars worked events in Tokyo, Taipei, Baltimore, Ocean City, Sioux City and Wildwood, among other cities. This schedule doesn't slow down either. The WWE calendar takes up nearly all of the year's 365 days.

There is no offseason either.

It comes as no surprise then that divorce and wrestling have such a close relationship. As much as phone calls, Skype sessions and texts can help ease the pain of being away from each other, eventually a marriage where the spouses are never around each other are likely to crumble.

Ric Flair has been divorced several times over, with his fourth wife filing for legal separation last December. John Cena and his wife recently divorced after three years of marriage.

One of the things that these two situations have in common is both men have been the top wrestler's in their respective companies. Being asked to carry a franchise the way Cena is currently and Flair once did for WCW has its ill effects on a relationship.

The world champ and biggest star of the company can't take lengthy breaks.

He must be the horse WWE rides to financial success. He must commit to the business of violence and spectacle so fully that his relationship with his wife and kids inevitably gets strained.

The Rock, Bret Hart, Randy Savage and Diamond Dallas Page are among the former world champions who have gotten divorced.

Constantly being in another city while one's wife is at home taking on the brunt of the familial duties is a recipe for stress, stress that has often led to a broken marriage.

That's something Tyler Reks saw early before it was too late.

Only in his early 30s and gaining momentum with his tag team with Curt Hawkins, Reks walked away from WWE in favor of being at home. He wrote (via F4WOnline.com) the following:

As a new father, my heart broke every time I had to leave to go on the road.  I didn't ever want to miss another moment with my daughter, so I made the decision to be a full time dad and hang up my boots.

Reks had to choose between climbing the ranks of the WWE and being a committed, available dad. The fact that he wasn't a top star likely made that decision easier.

It's harder to imagine Orton walking away early or Cena or Flair deciding to leave money, titles and success on the table in trade for a better home life.

Matt Morgan, still plenty of matches left in him, recently asked for his release from TNA.

Ricky Steamboat retired from wrestling in 1988 when he was one of the most popular wrestlers in the business. He could have been WWE Champion; he could have put together performances that had him climb the list of all-time greats.

Instead, he chose family.

Steamboat returned, heading to WCW in 1989. He later retired again in 1994. Steamboat later made sporadic appearances, but never committed to the life the way his longtime rival Flair did.

Doing double duty as a wrestler and a husband/father is a challenging balancing act. To be a great wrestler it often takes sacrificing being a great dad and husband.

Orton's divorce is not the last one we'll see involving a WWE Superstar. It's an unfortunate side effect of the life a wrestler leads, the lonely, unending road that wrestlers take to entertain fans and to create their legacies.
