Both the Superstars have earned an win in their past matches, where-in Orton got a quick win over his opponent at their first encounter at SummerSlam. The loss was so quick that Rusev's own countrymen in Bulgaria called him an 'disgrace' when he returned home.
Later, Rusev steal an win against Orton just after Orton had a long match with Aiden English and left him exhausted with the help of English.
The second win was an score settlement for Rusev for his people back home and called for an celebration. The Viper showed-up on Rusev Day parade and attacked Rusev with an brutal RKO and earned an chance to face him in a match at WWE Hell in a Cell.
Rusev is again on a quest to reclaim his pride, but no one know what Orton has in-stored for him. May be an 'RKO' outta no where. Rusev is very close to finishing his rivalry with John Cena. Their upcoming match at Payback will likely be the last one of the series, and fans everywhere are surely dialing in their picks for who's going over on May 17.
Many of those fans are probably going with Cena for the win, but it's not necessarily because they support him. They're picking him because his showdown with Rusev is an "I Quit" match, and there's no way Cena loses in that scenario. That's why Rusev will need to use desperate measures to get the victory, namely his mouthpiece, Lana.
There's been trouble brewing between the Russian Federation's power couple in recent weeks. That trouble stems from Rusev's inability to conquer Cena and Lana's sudden explosion in popularity.
The former comes down to the war being fought in the ring. Rusev has tried to intimidate Cena and assert his dominance over him at every turn, but it's just not worked. Cena's gimmick revolves around his ability to overcome every threat and never back down from any challenge.
While Rusev has certainly tested Cena's will, he ultimately can't even hope to damage it.
But the latter part of this situation is different. Lana has been getting over with the live crowds virtually every time she and Rusev have been on TV. While Cena cannot be controlled by Rusev, the same cannot truly be said for Lana.
A heel such as Rusev would not be happy with his advocate getting chummy with the fans. He has been so emotionless, so cold-blooded and focused on domination that not one ounce of compassion has escaped from him. So when it became obvious Lana was getting over with the same fans she once openly mocked, Rusev was obviously not going to take it lying down.
Now, he has to keep a constant eye on Lana. She can't smile in front of the crowd, can't acknowledge them positively and cannot accept their cheers. Much like Randy Savage before him, Rusev's focus is wavering due to the acclaim his other half is getting, and he just cannot let that happen.
But while it appears his hands are tied, nothing could be further from the truth.
Lana's willingness to embrace the fans could be her downfall and could cost Cena the United States Championship at Payback. Rusev's character is fully aware of how tough and resilient Cena is, and he's also aware of how the "I Quit" match is perfect for him. He knows there's no way Cena will surrender, so instead of trying to crush him physically, Rusev should instead try to best Cena mentally.
Cena should be kept in one place, perhaps with his arms bound between the top and second rope or maybe even handcuffed. That would give Rusev the opportunity to grab Lana and threaten her. He doesn't necessarily need to strike her or even put her in the Accolade—just the mere threat of harm would be enough.
It would put Cena in an impossible situation, one in which he would be forced to quit, thus giving the win to Rusev. The Bulgarian Brute knows that Cena is upstanding; the U.S. champion's morality is rock solid, so there's no chance he could sit back and watch Lana get hurt.
Cena may not like her because of the sins she's committed in the name of the Russian Federation, but he cannot allow her to be menaced or injured without stepping in to defend her. He knows the difference between right and wrong and would certainly rush to her defense.
That allows Rusev a route to victory. If he takes it, there will be a new U.S. champion at Payback.
The fact is Rusev has no other course of action. He can't destroy Cena and put him in such pain that he would be forced to give up. Cena has proved time and again he will never quit regardless of how much he's hurt. This means Rusev really has no prayer of forcing Cena to submit at Payback.
Intimidation will not work, brute strength is not the answer and a merciless beating will not suffice. Cena will not go down in this environment. With that being the case, Rusev has no other choice than to use Lana to his advantage.
The move would automatically set Lana off independently and get her over like never before. Cena would still look good as the American hero who did the right thing by protecting a defenseless woman. Rusev would be more of a monster main event player than ever before.
It's a win-win situation for everyone involved, and if Rusev is indeed meant to go over, this would really be the only way to do so. This match is not about the best man winning but the smartest man winning. Rusev must be smarter and much more vicious than Cena in order to get his arm raised in the end.
Being in WWE for shotest period of time Rusev has proved a point, that he is a serious threat, knowing this the unstoppable monster will try to take out the most decorated superstar: John Cena. This match was announced on Twitter on Jan 26.
After finishing as the first runner-up at Royal Rumble Rusev quickely stormed the sets of Royal Rumble fall-out where the Cenation leader was in the middle of an interview. Cena did not take it kindly and it erupted into and brawl.
So now it's offical, it won't be long enough where the WWE Universe witness who is stronger - Rusev or Cena.
Since Rusev's debut he has not been made to submit or pinned, will the 15-time WWE Champion will remove his frustation of his loss of Royal Rumble. The rookie monster has won the U.S Championship title and proved a point to the WWE Universe or will the Cenation Leader will win over Rusev and show him why he is a former world champion.
Rusev's domination of World Wrestling Entertainment since making his in-ring debut the night after WrestleMania XXX has been very impressive, but it was the mic work of Lana, coupled with the real life tension between Russia and the United States, that has helped fuel the character of late and make it one of the most despised in all of WWE.
With every passing week and every dismantling victory, fans wondered when self-professed "Real Americans" Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter would stand up in the face of the Rusev onslaught.
That time came on the June 30 episode of Raw, and the crowd responded quite favorably. After six years spent as a heel, Swagger instantly became a babyface. More importantly, he instantly became one of the most over babyfaces on the roster, proving that something as simple as a patriotic angle still works in today's wrestling landscape.
The promo work by Colter and Lana and the physical encounters between Swagger and Rusev have helped make their rivalry the hottest. As a result, their match at Battleground has become one of the most eagerly anticipated on the card. That anticipation brings with it a fair amount of pressure for Swagger and Rusev to deliver a match befitting of the hype and response.
Prediction: Double count-out
This is one of the most difficult matches on Sunday's card to predict.
Swagger and Colter have gotten over so strong as babyfaces that sacrificing that heat on a C-level event such as Battleground would be a mistake. At the same time, ending Rusev's undefeated streak via disqualification or count-out would be a disappointing way to conclude something fans are finally buying into.
Thus, the most effective finish for Sunday's match would be a double count-out.
Would it be satisfying? Absolutely not. But it would allow for the program to continue on for another match, leading to a much more high-profile match at SummerSlam.
The work of all of the talented people involved has earned them the right to continue their program. If the writing staff can continue to craft the quality of segments that it has to this point, crowds will continue to reward them with the loud, raucous responses that they have enjoyed thus far.

Rusev was foiled by former WWE Intercontinental Champion Big E, who stormed to the ring and took a hit from the "Bulgarian Brute." This looks set to lay the groundwork for Rusev's first main feud.
Big E is a great choice. Having dropped his title to Bad News Barrett, the Floridian is in danger of falling to the lower midcard without a meaningful feud. Rusev is now ready to move away from weekly squash matches, so the rivalry will be good for both men's careers.
If the two talented Superstars are given enough time in the ring together, they have the potential to construct a great match. A strong contest would cement both big guys as amongst the top powerhouse wrestlers in the WWE today.
