CM Punk's run as world champion surrounded by controversy again

When CM Punk made his on-air debut for World Wrestling Entertainment in Extreme Championship Wrestling, he immediately became a fan favorite. After competing on the independent circuit for several years, he took his chance in WWE seriously. He won the ECW Title from John Morrison in what was one of the best rivalries in the revival of the brand. The ECW Title today isn't thought upon as a world title anymore, as WWE doesn't even acknowledge it when talking about any of the past champions.

Punk won his first World Heavyweight Title on June 23, 2008 after cashing in his Money in the Bank contract against a worn down Edge. Punk held on to the title until September, where he was forced out of his Championship Scramble match after Legacy attacked him, leaving him unable to compete.

His second reign as World Heavyweight Champion was again started by cashing in his Money in the Bank contract. This time, Punk began a heel turn by using the contract to defeat a worn down Jeff Hardy who had just won the title by defeating Edge. This memorable angle had some "wow" moments, such as Punk walking out to the ring dressed like Hardy, face paint included. This title reign ended legitimately, when Hardy won the title at Night of Champions.

As Hardy was nearing his exit from WWE, these two men battled at SummerSlam in a match that saw Punk win the World Heavyweight Title for the third time. It was at the pay per view where The Undertaker returned to WWE and attacked the new champion, setting up a program between the two men.

This feud was filled with controversy, as these two men battled in a submission match that saw Punk lose the title, only to see have General Manager Teddy Long come out and restart the match. Punk won the match when the referee called for the bell during the Anaconda Vise even though The Undertaker didn't submit, a la Montreal screw-job. Eventually, The Undertaker won the belt, and Punk was off to start the Straight Edge Society.

Then came the most recent WWE Championship reign that saw Punk defeat John Cena, and walk away for the company for two weeks. Upon his return, a match was arranged between Punk and Cena to determine the undisputed WWE Champion. The match was held at SummerSlam, and ended in drama, as Punk earned the three-count from special referee Triple H with Cena's foot on the rope.

The controversy seemed as though it was over when Cena walked to the locker room and Punk was left to celebrate. During his celebration, Kevin Nash made his first appearance in WWE since January . One jack-knife power bomb later, and Alberto Del Rio made his way to the ring to cash in his title contract.

I don't know why WWE constantly uses these twists with Punk. He is one of the most popular superstars with the fans and one of the best all-around workers in the company. On talent alone, he should be able to become a champion and hold the title for a long period of time, too bad the powers that be don't feel the same way.
