The Rock vs Angle, Austin's Stunner: Iconic WWF SmackDown January 24, 2002


WWF SmackDown on January 24, 2002, delivered high-stakes action from the North Charleston Coliseum in South Carolina as part of the Undisputed WWF Championship No. 1 Contendership Tournament. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin overcame Booker T in a semi-final, while Kurt Angle upset The Rock amid shocking interference.

Tournament Kickoff and Atmosphere

The episode opened with hype for the four-man tournament to determine Chris Jericho's challenger at No Way Out, featuring semi-finals on SmackDown and the final on Raw. Fans packed the North Charleston Coliseum for a night blending intense rivalries with WWF's Attitude Era edge.

Key undercard matches set the tone, including Rob Van Dam's quick win over Intercontinental Champion William Regal via Five Star Frog Splash and Rikishi's Banzai Drop victory against Big Bossman. Tag action saw champions Spike Dudley and Tazz retain against Albert and Scotty 2 Hotty in a chaotic bout.

Stone Cold vs. Booker T Breakdown

"Stone Cold" Steve Austin faced Booker T in a gritty semi-final, with the winner advancing to Raw. Austin controlled early with a spinebuster and neckbreaker, but Booker shifted momentum via superkick and leg work, sending Austin into the steps.

Booker hit a spinaroonie after countering the Stunner, followed by a scissors kick for a near fall, but Austin reversed into his own Stunner for the pin at around 9:16. This win propelled Austin toward Jericho, building on their grocery store brawl rivalry from late 2001.


Kurt Angle vs. The Rock Chaos

The main event pitted Olympic hero Kurt Angle against The Rock, both vying for title contention. They traded suplexes and signature moves, with Angle applying the Ankle Lock and Rock countering with a Sharpshooter.

Chaos erupted as Undisputed Champion Chris Jericho distracted the ref on commentary, then The Undertaker appeared for a devastating chokeslam on Rock, allowing Angle the pin. This interference stemmed from Rock mocking Taker's Royal Rumble elimination by Maven.

Bigger Picture and No Way Out Build

Winners Austin and Angle were set to clash on Raw for the No. 1 contendership shot at Jericho during No Way Out on February 17. Vince McMahon's eerie promos teased the nWo invasion, adding corporate drama amid the wrestling fireworks.

This SmackDown exemplified WWF's peak storytelling, blending athletic matches with interference angles that fueled PPVs. Tables matches like Kane & Big Show vs. Dudley Boyz and women's action rounded out a stacked card.

The Rock comments on his post-Raw call to CM Punk


While it’s not exactly an in-depth explanation, and it’s certainly not an apology, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has commented on his post-Raw segment where he called CM Punk from the ring at Staples Center on Monday, Feb. 19... allegedly to the consternation of WWE management.

In ReTweeting a story about the bit, Rocky said this:



The one thing this Tweet addresses directly is whether or not the voicemail was a pre-meditated bit, as some have wondered. Johnson knew he’d be mentioning AJ Lee, Punk’s wife, when setting up the scene about to be filmed for Fighting With My Family and could have anticipated the Los Angeles crowd chanting for her husband. That could still be the case, but considering how most current day Rock promos go, it’s easy to believe him when he says he was improvising.

You have to do a deeper read to see this as any kind of response to the reports from Wrestling Observer and PWInsider that his call angered Vince McMahon & Triple H. There’s a decent chance the busiest man in Hollywood isn’t even aware of those stories.


But if he is, and/or if Vince and team made him aware of their displeasure on Monday, saying “I gave the people want they wanted and they & I had fun” is a good shutdown.

The Rock called CM Punk from the ring after Raw went off the air in Los Angeles

Without appearing on the main USA Network broadcast of Raw, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson sure has had an eventful night with WWE at Staples Center.

 He kicked off the evening with a segment with Vince McMahon before the televised portion of the show began, and he came out to keep the crowd fired up before shooting started on the in-ring scene for Fighting With My Family started (a recreation of Paige winning the Divas title in her main roster debut the night after WrestleMania 30).

I guess since that scene will feature his wife, AJ Lee, the Los Angeles crowd started a CM Punk chant. And, since he’s The Rock and can do whatever the f*** he wants, Johnson got out his cell phone and called Punk. Sadly, it went to voicemail. But he left a message!


Not to be thwarted, The Great One tried to FaceTime The Best In The World, but...

Ah well, he tried.

Seeing as he just got Punk trending again, though, it’s no wonder Vince fired him.


UPDATE: Punk explained why he couldn’t answer... it’s his dog’s birthday.

Vince McMahon fired The Rock before Raw went on the air in Los Angeles

We knew The Rock would be appearing at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California to do something for the crowd before Monday Night Raw went on the air this evening, because he told us. And he did just that, hyping up the crowd while letting them know to stick around after the show to be a part of filming a movie he’s working on.

You knew they would run an angle, though.

Sure enough, after he was done doing his thing, Vince McMahon showed up to fire him (the first video cuts off right as the firing is happening, the second is right after it happened):




Hopefully WWE releases a better video later. We’ll pass it along if they do.

The Rock Gets An Apology from John Cena

Even “the face that runs the place” can admit when he is wrong.

Last night on “Talking Smack,” John Cena was being interviewed by JBL and Renee Young, when a question came up regarding Cena’s matches with The Rock at WrestleMania 28 and 29.

JBL commented that Cena called The Rock out for being a part-timer, but has now himself transitioned into that role. When JBL asked if Cena now considers himself being in a similar role to what The Rock was in back then, the leader of the “CeNation” said that what he said was the “stupidest stuff ever” and that he was looking at things through “very blinded eyes.”
Cena made his return to WWE programming last night on “Smackdown Live,” where it was announced that he will face AJ Styles for the WWE Championship at the 2017 “Royal Rumble.”

The Rock Comments on Potential WrestleMania 32 Match vs. Triple H

The Rock and Triple H engaged in one of the greatest rivalries in the history of WWE, and The Great One recently acknowledged that there has been talk about potentially rekindling it at WrestleMania 32.

In an interview with Justin Barrasso of SI.com, The Most Electrifying Man in Entertainment admitted that he and The Game have had discussions regarding the possibility of locking horns at the Dallas Cowboys' AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, next year:

Look, the platform is there. You have Dallas and could set an attendance record, so that's the first goal. And then what is the match that allows us to do that? I've had incredible matches with Triple H, so I'm not ruling it out, but I'm not saying it is going to happen. We continue to talk about it, and we're still shooting each other text messages. He sent me a message from Dallas that said, 'This could be us. The record is ours.' So we'll see.

While The Rock is noncommittal about the notion of doing battle with The Cerebral Assassin on the Grandest Stage of Them All, there is reason to believe that it could come to fruition in some form.

The two legendary Superstars had a memorable encounter at WrestleMania 31 in March, as The Rock and UFC star Ronda Rousey confronted and ultimately beat down Triple H and his wife, Stephanie McMahon.

All the pieces are in place, and The Rock's comments suggest that Triple H is ready and willing, so it may come down to how The People's Champion feels about it.

Regardless of how he is used, though, WWE would undoubtedly love to have The Rock involved with WrestleMania 32 in some capacity since one of the biggest box office draws in the world would help immensely in terms of drawing more than 100,000 fans.

Update on WrestleMania 31 Plans for the Rock and Triple H

Last month, in one of the biggest surprises in recent memory, the Rock made his return to the WWE.

The one-off appearance came about after The Great One’s movie schedule took him to New York, which coincidentally was hosting Raw that week. Talk about perfect timing.

The Brahma Bull made his presence felt in a classic exchange with Rusev. Not only was the segment thoroughly amusing, but it also acted as a clear sign that management is invested wholeheartedly in the Bulgarian Brute.

As Chris Jericho will surely confirm, nothing quite elevates a relative newcomer like an interaction with The Rock.

And who said part-timers were damaging the product?

But as great as the showdown with Rusev was, the best was yet to come. In a pre-taped promo for the 15th anniversary of SmackDown, The Rock then encountered Triple H.

Again, this segment was entertaining as hell, but most importantly there was also a clear purpose. As the banter simmered down, the tension picked up and the seed was emphatically planted for a WrestleMania showdown between the two.


Fast-forward to today, and it appears that seed may be starting to flourish.

As reported by Nick Paglino of WrestleZone, the WWE "might be moving forward" with plans for the Rock vs. Triple H in a battle for control of the company.

Naturally, The Game would represent The Authority, but in a rehash of a scrapped WrestleMania XXX angle, The Rock would be representing Mr. McMahon.

The initial idea for WrestleMania XXX had been for Stone Cold Steve Austin to align with McMahon. From a storyline perspective, this would arguably have been more fitting, given the Rattlesnake’s history with the chairman of the board.

But for whatever reason—most likely Austin’s history of neck problems—that plan was not pursued.

The Rock, on the other hand, is much younger and fitter than Austin. So already this one looks more feasible than the initial idea. Furthermore, we saw McMahon back on TV as recently as this past week on Raw.

Was this the writers setting in motion a power struggle angle for WrestleMania 31?

With over four months remaining until the Showcase of the Immortals, it may be too early to tell. Nonetheless, recent developments have certainly kept the door open for this one to come to fruition.

So what would this mean for the rest of the card?

We’re likely to see Brock Lesnar face Roman Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, so this wouldn’t change anything there.

Recent tension has been very much apparent between Dean Ambrose and The Authority, but why have Ambrose go after Triple H when he clearly has unfinished business with Seth Rollins? Especially after the way Hell in a Cell finished.

Daniel Bryan should be back by then, and he’ll be looking to reestablish his legacy. Pairing him with John Cena—who will likely be destroyed by Lesnar once again at the 2015 Royal Rumble—you can easily book a classic “road to redemption” style match which would no doubt be of the highest order.

Add to that the old-school dream of The Undertaker vs. Sting, and you’ve got five matches there that could sell any pay-per-view.

Long story short, pitting The Rock against Triple H leaves plenty of options throughout the rest of the card, while the battle for power will add an intriguing element to a clash already brimming with history and backstory.

As mentioned earlier, it’s still a long way off, but the wheels are certainly in motion. It’ll be interesting to keep an eye on this one to see how the Survivor Series elimination match could affect things.

WWE Debate: Of CM Punk, Stone Cold, Rock, Batista and the IWC's Hypocrisy

I write this with the expectation of receiving buckets of hate. In this day and age, fans have many demands that mean little once quenched, for more are born within the same period. It's an ever-expanding, ever-evolving wish list, one that leaves no one truly satisfied and everyone complaining.

These very fans also dislike being called out on the inconsistency of their demands; their laudatory vision of WWE, while extremely unstable and unlikely, is perceived the most idealistic one.

CM Punk set the WWE Universe alight with his highly controversial departure back in January, when he left the company as quietly as he could. Rumours, including this one from Power Slam Magazine (via Christopher Olmstead of Wrestling News Depot), whizzed through the buzzing dirt sheets claiming Punk's exhaustion and annoyance with his booking status as the primary reasons for his abrupt exit.

Others disregarded it all as a work, for Punk is not new to these scandals. They started preparing a rousing ovation for a Raw in Chicago when he would undoubtedly return to his city for the build to WrestleMania. When he failed to show, hope for a WrestleMania 30 return surfaced, followed by a final, desperate, halfhearted plea for him to show up at the Payback pay-per-view in Chicago.

But CM Punk, as pulsating, built-up frustration in many fans would tell you, never came back.

The moment the harsh reality started to settle in and the glimmer of hope began to fade, hatred began to flow from all corners. The preachers of morality within the Internet Wrestling Community started their sermons of contractual obligations and repaying the fans' support. The ones blinded by rage began questioning Punk's relevance in the WWE, his wrestling skills, promo skills and the man himself.

He is still backed by a loyal cult of fans who can relate to his departure and understand what the guy went through. These fans, much like John Cena fans, have been shunned and forced into a despicable club, for they stand for a wrestler whom a large segment legitimately hates.

All I ask for in the midst of it all is consistency.

Fans still cheer and respect a true WWE icon in Stone Cold Steve Austin, a man notorious for having left the WWE in a similar fashion—disgruntled and frustrated by booking decisions. The financial and sentimental obligations remained and were even larger for Steve Austin because he was a bigger star than CM Punk during a time when WWE enjoyed a larger fanbase.

He chose to leave, yet we cheer him on. This really begs the question: Are our ethics and morals defined by the Superstars we love and hate? Is it OK for Stone Cold to do something because we respect him but not CM Punk because we don't?

In fact, WWE itself reacted much more negatively to Austin's act of "taking his ball and going home," while CM Punk is nowhere close to getting the infamous WWE spite other wrestlers usually get. His absence was positively acknowledged by Paul Heyman—who painted him in a sympathetic light—his DVD was heavily marketed and apart from a few jabs from The Authority, he hasn't received much negativity from a company he left stranded.

Why, then, do we feel an urge to blame the individual when we clearly don't blame other such acts of betrayal? Will we take him back in loving arms like we took Austin if he decides to come back a year later and expresses regret?

It's the same thing that happened with Batista. Fans were quick to criticise a part-time wrestler taking the main event spot fresh from Hollywood—even though The Rock had been doing it for a couple of years already. Yet The Rock was treated as a god and Batista a joke. Once again, our beliefs were only defined by the wrestlers' personalities and not actual morals and ethics.

I say this as a massive Stone Cold Steve Austin and CM Punk fan. I do not condemn either for leaving the company, for I can relate with the frustration of being a part of something you don't enjoy anymore. I cheer for both, for I genuinely wish for these exceptional performers to be back onscreen. Because in the end, this is entertainment, and that's all I really care about.

The Rock to Wrestle at WrestleMania 31 Next Year?

With one major pay-per-view finished, it's now time for WWE management to look ahead to the next big show—SummerSlam.

Per Bryan Alvarez in this week's (subscribers-only) F4W Newsletter, a major matche is currently scheduled for the show. WrestleMania 31 is also apparently being planned too, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson's name already being thrown around.
"Penciled in at the moment: Roman Reigns vs. Triple H at SummerSlam and Brock Lesnar vs. The Rock or Cesaro at WrestleMania 31. Brock-Cesaro seems like such an obvious direction and such a perfect match to elevate Cesaro that it seems dumb not to do it. On top of that, with Rock being increasingly fragile and Undertaker being hurt in the "safe" version of a Lesnar match, I'm not sure it's a good idea for safety/The Rock's film insurance reasons."
Triple H vs. Roman Reigns sounds like an intriguing idea, and it seems like the natural culmination of the current Evolution vs. The Shield program taking place on WWE television right now.

After some early awkward and wooden performances, Reigns has been getting more and more comfortable in the babyface role, and a showdown with Triple H could likely be the thing that solidifies him as a main eventer.

(Provided, of course, “The Game” agrees to put the up-and-comer over in a credible fashion. But considering how strong Triple H made Daniel Bryan look at WrestleMania XXX, this shouldn't be an issue.)

Lesnar vs. Cesaro at WrestleMania also sounds like a good idea, especially with manager Paul Heyman caught in the middle.

As for a potential Rock return? Well, it would undoubtedly send buyrates through the roof and garner the company huge mainstream press—just like all the other times the star has wrestled.

But as Alvarez mentions, there is Rock's physical state to consider.

Rock's almost frightening litany of injuries following his main event clash with John Cena at last year's WrestleMania—in a basic, safe-looking match that honestly never came off as particularly stiff or hard-hitting—perhaps should have served as a sign to the Hercules star that his wrestling days might be well and truly behind him.

The Rock Reveals His Original Plans For WrestleMania XXX, When Might He Return?

The Rock did another #RockTalk chat on Twitter this afternoon. A fan asked him if he would be returning for WrestleMania XXX. Rock says he, Vince McMahon and Brock Lesnar had plans for a Rock vs. Brock match in 2014 but that won't be happening. Rock added that there's a chance he will return for WrestleMania 31.

The Rock Gave LeBron the WWE Championship Belt for His Birthday

Yesterday was LeBron James’ 29th birthday. The current best basketball player in the world, of course, got a bunch of birthday greetings over social media, including messages from his teammate Dwyane Wade, Magic Johnson, a pair of headphones, and even our own Andy Gray.

But sorry, Dwyane, Magic, Andy, and Dr Dre’s headphones, the Rock topped all of you with this.

Now, it’s worth noting that The Rock isn’t the current WWE Champion — he lost the title to John Cena last April at Wrestlemania 29. Randy Orton — known as The Legend Killer — is the current WWE Champion. Perhaps we should have a LeBron James vs Randy Orton match to decide who is the undisputed WWE Champion once and for all.
