AJ Styles Confirms He’ll Retire in 2026 Ahead of WWE Crown Jewel

AJ Styles announced during the Crown Jewel kickoff show that he plans to retire from in-ring competition in 2026. He said, “I’m getting old … the fear of embarrassing myself is getting closer,” and emphasized his desire to spend more time with his family as a reason for stepping away.

He added that while he’d wrestle forever if he could, there comes a point when a person must “take care of business” and make room for life beyond the ring. Styles is expected to still appear at WrestleMania 42 and may shift into a behind-the-scenes role once his active career ends.

AJ Styles reacts to Shane McMahon's big announcement for the upcoming Fastlane PPV

The Phenomenal One will be defending his WWE Championship Title in a fatal four-way match at WWE Fastlane PPV.

WWE Champion AJ Styles has tweeted on his official Twitter handle to express his thoughts to which were declared by the SmackDown General Commissioner Shane McMahon with regards to the upcoming Fastlane PPV.

As stated that on last week's Smackdown Live (READ), WWE had reported that Dolph Ziggler will face 'The Lone Wolf' Baron Corbin in a one-on-one match.

Moreover, as confirmed by GM Daniel Bryan this week on SmackDown, WWE Champion AJ Styles will defend his title against Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn at the upcoming Fastlane PPV in a Triple Threat Match, in any case, that match will now be changed to a Fatal-Four-Way as declared by Shane McMahon.

Prior today, SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon affirmed on Twitter that the winner of the match between Dolph Ziggler and Baron Corbin for the next week's match on SmackDown Live will be added to the WWE Fastlane PPV main event match for the WWE Championship chance against at AJ Styles.

Styles did not only defeated Kevin Owens but also Chris Jericho in the Triple Threat match, who made an surprise come back.



Owens has won the title at Sunday's WWE Battleground PPV, so Styles has a rematch in his bag. These superstars don't need an pay-per-view to continue this bout. Eventually Styles won the title.

AJ Styles Reportedly Robbed During Live Event This Week

AJ Styles was reportedly robbed at the 1/16 live event in Gainesville, GA, according to KAIT-TV Region 8 News. As Styles wrestled on the card, someone stole his cash and belongings, including $1,000 in US currency and $7,000 in Japanese yen. The thief also stole an iPhone, a set of Beats headphones, a small screen TV, an Xbox 360 console and 6 Xbox games. Police continue to investigate the case but this is the second time since September that a performer has had items stolen from the Convocation Center.

AJ Styles vs Undertaker, Bliss injury, Hero schedule, more!

- There were plans for AJ Styles to defend his WWE World title against the Undertaker at Royal Rumble, according to PWInsider. The shift to John Cena came around the same time the Creative team was changed up with the dismissal of Managing Writer Tom Casiello.

- The “injury” Alexa Bliss suffered during Tuesday’s Women’s title match was possible because the champ’s elbow joints are hypermobile (aka “double jointed”); she did not break or dislocate anything.

- Speaking of SmackDown injuries, Heath Slater Tweeted after the show he thought he’d been hurt in the tag title match, but later said he got a clean bill of health from the medical team.

- Chris Hero is working for Evolve on Royal Rumble weekend, including a show running at the same time as TakeOver: San Antonio, so if he is still coming to WWE, it won’t be until February.

- After working the first match in 205 Live history, the Bollywood Boys were sent back to the Performance Center, as management thought they needed more work.

- There is a graphic making the rounds, for whatever that's worth, that is advertising John Cena vs. AJ Styles in a 2-out-of-3 Falls match at Elimination Chamber in February.

- According to the Observer, WWE still hasn't decided on what Roman Reigns will be doing at WrestleMania 33 but it's entirely possible he'll be Universal champion and that he could be winning it at Royal Rumble next month.

- Dave Meltzer also noted there has been a "big surprise" idea floated for Reigns but it probably won't happen.

- PW Insider notes there's been talk that an official announcement could be coming soon from Anthem Sports and Entertainment on purchasing TNA. Furthermore, Dixie Carter will be completely out of power.

- Also noted on TNA from PW Insider: Impact this week will feature footage from the Hardy compound with "something unique" that we've never seen before in pro wrestling.

Was Baron Corbin Carried Through That Incredible WWE Championship Match?

SmackDown ended the year with a big triple threat match for the World Heavyweight Championship, as AJ Styles and Dolph Ziggler’s planned title match got a monkey wrench shaped like Baron Corbin thrown into the works. Corbin, who made his debut this year, ended 2016 finding himself in a title match. More than that, he was dominate for much of the match, even if he didn’t end up winning.

The question is, is this a sign of things to come? More to the point, should it be? The WWE clearly liked Corbin to begin with, because in his debut he won the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. That’s an easy way to give a guy a boost and make him look tough. It was something of a hook for him, even if it became increasingly silly to hear him announced as the winner of said battle royal. Then, he found himself feuding with guys like Ziggler and Kalisto, always ending up with the upper hand in the end. He was on Smackdown’s main Survivor Series team, until he was “injured” by Kalisto and Shane McMahon took his spot. Getting in that match would have likely signified big things for Corbin. Just look at where Braun Strowman’s trajectory has gone since he was in that match. Instead, he had to wait a little until he got something even Strowman hasn’t gotten; a title shot.



Corbin was good in the match, but he definitely benefited from working with Styles and Ziggler. They were taking huge bumps and making Corbin look great. That’s not Corbin’s fault. Styles and Ziggler make everybody look good. That’s part of what makes them such talented wrestlers. However, Corbin showed he could carry his own. He seems like he has the skills to be a key cog in the Smackdown machine. He has something of a personality. That whole “Most Metal Athlete” thing helps just as much as the battle royal win, probably. He’s middling on the mic, but as a big heel, that’s all he really needs to be. It’d be too early to give Corbin a real feud with somebody like Styles. They need to find a good face for him to have a program with. Perhaps Dean Ambrose would be good for that, but he’s tied up with The Miz at the moment. Corbin ended 2016 showing the potential he has. Now he just needs to capitalize on it.

Bray Wyatt On James Ellsworth Possibly Beating AJ Styles And Response to Matt Hardy

- During the interview, Wyatt was asked about making a run for the WWE Championship, whether it be from AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose or James Ellsworth, which caused Wyatt to groan. Wyatt noted that AJ Styles is a world-traveled athlete and that while he hates Styles, Styles is world-class. "James Ellsworth, kudos and hooray for him," Wyatt said. "But we're talking AJ Styles here. It's not going to happen."

- As noted, Matt Hardy and Bray Wyatt have been going back-and-forth on Twitter after Hardy extended an invite to the Wyatts to appear at Thursday's Total Non-Stop Deletion episode of Impact Wrestling. Matt Hardy responded to Wyatt's last tweet, you can check out the full exchange below:

Undertaker return, AJ Styles injury, Cena schedule, Lawler status, more!

- Undertaker was backstage at Raw in Austin last night, and it’s likely he’ll not only be at SmackDown in Houston tonight, but will appear on the show for the first time since the Survivor Series ‘go home’ show last month.

- AJ Styles was pulled from the Dec. 5 house show in Tyler, Texas as a precaution following his ankle injury at TLC, but he’s still expected to work his match against James Ellsworth on tonight’s SmackDownbroadcast.

- Wrestling Observer is the latest to report on WWE’s increasing concern they may not have a lot of John Cena’s time in 2017 due to his TV and film commitments.

- Jerry Lawler’s only contract with WWE right now is a Legends deal. He’ll continue to work special events like the Hall of Fame ceremony, but won’t be on an announcer or pre-show host going forward, per 411mania.

- On the subject of pre-shows, both the regular pre-Raw and SmackDownones were cut to 10 minutes this week.

WWE Rumors: WWE Still Planning The Club vs. The Shield For Late 2016

Before The Club & The Shield can share a WWE ring, there are a lot of factors that must come together for the six or more men to even get to that point on WWE television. For starters, there is the question of when or if Finn Balor will be a factor in this feud. We know that Balor is coming to the main roster via the WWE Draft, so how is he going to fit in with The Club?

According to the report, Vince McMahon wants The Club stable to become much stronger before a feud with The Shield, which makes sense. The trio of AJ Styles, Karl Anderson, and Luke Gallows have a lot of history together, but they need to be built up for the WWE Universe to see their chemistry and dominance.

There is also the possibility of WWE adding more members to The Club, which would complicate matters in a potential feud with The Shield. Finn Balor is one factor, but other names like Samoa Joe and Shinsuke Nakamura have also been brought up as potential new members of the group.

Needless to say, WWE is still making decisions about how to book The Club, so a possible feud with The Shield will have to be put off until after the feud with John Cena is over, new members are added, and The Club is the strongest stable in WWE.

The Club is only half the feud. The other half is reforming The Shield, which is no easy feat considering the current state of WWE. The current WWE Champion Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns are a little busy at the moment with a triple threat match at WWE Battleground. The Shield is feuding within itself right now, so it may not be the best time for a reunion tour.

The WWE Draft has the potential to break up The Shield, but there are always ways for WWE to get all three men on Raw or SmackDown together. If they are, Ambrose is the top face in the company. The WWE Universe is begging for Rollins to embrace a face turn, and Reigns is still technically a good guy despite his dynamic with the WWE fans.

The point is a Shield reunion would get all three men on the same page if The Club were getting too strong and The Hounds of Justice had to reset the established order of WWE. It’s complex how a feud would begin between the two stables, but WWE hasn’t given up on the potential rivalry of these two great trios.

Originally, it was rumored that The Club vs. The Shield would take place at WWE Battleground. That rumor was kaput some time ago and is clearly not happening in two weeks. However, Survivor Series isn’t that much of a stretch if WWE officials and Vince McMahon are serious about this feud. There is no doubt that we’ll see The Club vs. The Shield someday, the question is when WWE will pull the trigger and give us the feud of a lifetime.
