WWE has done a lot of things wrong with the CM Punk angle and the build for SummerSlam, but one thing that went 100 percent right was the final segment on Raw last night with Punk and John Cena sitting face-to-face in the middle of the ring signing the contract for their match on Sunday.
It was 15 minutes of pure adrenaline that saved SummerSlam from being a potential disaster as far as the buy rate is concerned.
Triple H, who will serve as the special referee in the match, and John Laurinaitis were also in the ring, but they were merely innocent bystanders for CM Punk, who gets better and better on the microphone every week.
Punk did everything in his power to further illustrate why he is the best hope for change in the WWE, why Cena is the biggest phony in the company and why he wants to bring down the Cenation empire.
The video begins with Punk talking about the first major title that he won in WWE, the ECW championship, and how Cena congratulated him and told him that he "almost gave up" on Punk.
It was a nice call back to the past when Punk was still seen as an outsider despite being one of the best wrestlers in Ring of Honor for years before joining WWE, and it makes Cena look like even more of a "WWE guy" because he did not even acknowledge Punk's accomplishments outside of WWE.
Cena got in some choice words on Punk as well, saying that Punk has to win or else he is a one-hit wonder, but this promo was all about Punk.
Punk was the one who sold the match to the audience. The WWE championship might not be as important in this match as WWE wants you to think, but Punk's quest to be the top guy and put Cena in his place turned the match into the big deal that it should have been right from the beginning.
