WWE Smackdown 8/9/11 taping spoilers

With SummerSlam just days away, Tuesday night marked the filming of Friday Night Smackdown, the final show before SummerSlam this Sunday.

After this, there WILL BE SPOILERS!!!

If you don't want to know what happens yet, you've been warned.

With WWE World Heavyweight Champion Christian telling COO Triple H that he needed to speak with him on Smackdown this past Monday on Raw, Triple H did in fact make an appearance at the event.

Also, the biggest names on the Smackdown roster were in action, but not against whom you may expect.

Ezekiel Jackson defended the WWE Intercontinental Championship against another Smackdown mainstay.

Was "Big Zeke" able to keep a hold of his title?

Also, in what may have been the most interesting moment of the taping, a suspended WWE Superstar made a return that led to a big reception from the crowd.

Find out who that Superstar was—and more—in the following slides!

WWE COO Triple H Announces Matches, Confronts Christian
To kick the show off, COO Triple H made an appearance so he could hear what exactly it was that Christian wanted to speak with him about.

Before talking to Christian, though, Triple H made three matches for the night:

-Ezekiel Jackson (c) vs. Cody Rhodes for the WWE Intercontinental Championship
-Alberto Del Rio vs. Daniel Bryan
-Randy Orton vs. The Great Khali

From there, Christian came out to speak with Triple H, with the World Heavyweight Champion insisting on removing the street fight stipulation from his match with Randy Orton at SummerSlam, or he'd sue.

It should be no surprise to anyone that Triple H told Christian the match was still on.

Sheamus Defeats Christian By—Count Out?
The first match of the evening appears to have been a short one.

Christian was scheduled to take on Sheamus in a singles match to kick off Friday Night Smackdown, but Christian refused to tangle with the Irishman and stood on the ramp as he was counted out.

That's alright, though, as the two would meet again later in the show—although it won't be on the Smackdown broadcast Friday night.

More on that later...

Beth Phoenix & Natalya Win Win a Tag Team Bout, Zack Ryder Still with Teddy Long
The formidable Divas Beth Phoenix and Natalya were in action in a tag team match against Kaitlyn and A.J.

With Beth facing WWE Divas Champion Kelly Kelly at SummerSlam and Natalya cleaning house on Smackdown, we could see the face of the Divas division changing sooner rather than later.

Beth pinned A.J. for the win, and Natalya had Kaitlyn in a sharpshooter.

Whether or not the match will be of the same quality as Beth's match against Eve Torres at this past Monday Night Raw remains to be seen.

After the match, there was a segment that featured Teddy Long, Zack Ryder (WWWYKI), Cody Rhodes, Ted Dibiase and Aksana.

No word on what this segment was actually about, but hey, I'm down with more face time for Zack Ryder.

WWE Superstar Sin Cara Makes His Return (or Did He?)
Yes, the suspended WWE Superstar Sin Cara returned to action, taking on Tyson Kidd in a bout that will be aired on Friday.

Sin Cara won the match, but that's not the real story here.

For those of you who were unaware, Sin Cara should still be suspended, but Bleacher Report's David Bixenspan highlighted the situation, as the WWE was rumored to be taking steps to bring Sin Cara back to action.

The rumor was that Sin Cara's on screen persona would be played by another luchador, Hunico.

Multiple reports coming in say that the crowd noticed no difference and assumed that it was Sin Cara.

He received a huge reaction from the crowd, and the match went off without a hitch.  So, was it the real Sin Cara or Hunico?

Alberto Del Rio Defeats Daniel Bryan in a Battle of Money in the Bank Winners
Alberto Del Rio came over from Raw to get a win under his belt (or should I say briefcase?) before SummerSlam this Sunday, as he took on fellow submission specialist, and Money in the Bank winner, Daniel Bryan.

Del Rio won via submission.

We still have no real clue what Del Rio will be doing at SummerSlam, which certainly does no favors for him as a character, but Daniel Bryan's current feud with Wade Barrett got some play after this match, with Barrett coming out and attacking Bryan afterwards.

It should be safe to assume that Daniel Bryan will face Wade Barrett at SummerSlam.

As for Alberto Del Rio, he may be stuck facing Kofi Kingston once again.

Destiny is awfully unforgiving, isn't it?

Cody Rhodes Defeats Ezekiel Jackson, Becoming WWE Intercontinental Champion
This was a bit of a shocker, as Cody Rhodes defeated Ezekiel Jackson and became the WWE Intercontinental Champion.

It would appear that these two will be having a rematch at SummerSlam, but can Big Zeke take back his title?

The title reign of Ezekiel Jackson has been a quiet one, I can't help but wonder if the WWE felt that being a big and powerful wrestler with average mic skills couldn't cut it for the time being.

Love him or hate him, at least Cody Rhodes has a gimmick that incites a reaction from the crowd.

After this match, Randy Orton cut a promo saying he was going to unleash his anger at SummerSlam.

He also discussed his match with The Great Khali.  Orton needs a body to go through on Smackdown, regardless of how well they can sell the RKO.

Mark Henry Crushes Johnny Curtis, Randy Orton RKOs the Great Khali
Mark Henry faced Johnny Curtis in what I can only assume was the typical Mark Henry monster crush match.

Mark Henry catches a lot of heat from fans, but honestly, his heel work recently is some of the best stuff I can remember him being a part of.

Sheamus came out and tried to pick a fight with Henry, as any large, red-headed Irishman would.

Sheamus said he didn't want to wait until SummerSlam to get a piece of him.

Afterwards, Randy Orton faced the Great Khali in the main event.

As expected, Orton finished off Khali with an RKO.  Christian came down and traded words with Orton to finish off the show.

When the cameras stopped rolling, Randy Orton and Sheamus were in a tag match against Christian and Alberto Del Rio.

The match was made by Triple H, and there was some quality mic work between him and Christian.

Randy Orton hit the RKO on Christian for the pin while Sheamus and Del Rio brawled their way backstage.  It's a shame we won't get to see it Friday.
