New Details Emerge on Latest Diva Search, Modelling Agencies Contacted?

Eager to find new Divas to fill up its alarmingly thin women's roster, WWE appears to be going on a signing spree. Hollywood stunt woman and kickboxer Kendra Smith was signed last week and an unofficial Diva Search is currently being held down in Los Angeles.

In this week's (subscribers only) Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer goes into the details:

Bill DeMott has been presiding over a camp in Los Angeles where they’ve taken ten models and are paying them for several weeks to train and those who impress them will be given contracts and taken to Florida. Essentially it’s this year’s Diva Search, but without it being televised. They are doing it because so many women have quit and there are only a few in developmental.

Over at her official Twitter account, indie star and former Playboy model Reby Sky, commented on reports. Noting that her modelling agency had been contacted by WWE for potential recruits, she sarcastically hinted that "wrestling purists" were not going to happy with the latest contest.


No doubt many fans will roll their eyes at the news of WWE using modelling agencies to find new female stars, and not unfairly.

OK, it might be too much to ask that the company scour the indie scene for the finest female wrestlers around (if WWE was ever going take that approach, it would have done so by now). But surely management could continue the trend of signing athletic, skilled women like Smith who have viable sports backgrounds. You know, ones who are far more likely to pick up wrestling far quicker.

Of course, it's very possible we're being too judgmental here. Hey, the latest Diva Search could produce some decent female talent, especially if they are going to have to showcase their athleticism in training before getting signed.
