Usos vs. Wyatts Is the Perfect Feud for WWE Tag Team Championships

The tag team feud between The Usos and The Wyatts already has a template.

Throughout 2014, fans have been treated to a lengthy feud between John Cena and Bray Wyatt. The rivalry had its ups and downs, but it achieved WWE and Cena’s admitted goal of ushering in the next generation.

Basic as it may sound, Wyatt and Cena worked well together as rivals because they were perfect foils for one another.

On one hand was the square-jawed, cookie-cutter babyface in John Cena. He’s an All-American, real-life Superman who proudly trots out to the ring after a patriotic pre-match salute.

Cena’s bright neon colors are designed to pique the interests and imagination of a family-friendly demographic that is just as vocal (“let’s go Cena!”) and more common than the loud Internet crowd.

It’s the reason John Cena has been the biggest star in the WWE for over 10 years.

That aforementioned loud Internet crowd backs Bray Wyatt. His dark and complex persona appeals to the eclectic tastes of the more seasoned fan. Just as Heath Ledger was critically acclaimed for his role as the Joker, Bray Wyatt sinks deep into character to play the bad guy.

It’s almost as if, following each show, Wyatt throws his gear in a 1985 Dodge Caravan and retires to a compound in the swamps.

Wyatt is WWE’s modern-day thespian who garners support from the highbrow fan of the wrestling opera.

John Cena is a Saturday morning cartoon come to life. For optimal viewing, watch Cena on a couch with a bowl of Fruity Pebbles.

Cena and Wyatt’s feud spanned three pay-per-views. And although Money in the Bank will represent the first time since Elimination Chamber where the two have not had a singles match, the Cena-Wyatt struggle continues.

Cena and Wyatt’s last match at Payback—a glorious hardcore free-for-all—begat The Usos and Wyatts feud.



On one side were the two Usos: Bright neon colors. Facepaint. A pre-match salute designed to get the fans involved (“When I say ‘Uce!’).

Sound familiar?

The Usos represent the ideal tag team for the John Cena generation. Like Cena, they’re a throwback to the easy-to-digest superhero.

The smiling, yet aggressive, Samoan high-flyers are over for the same reasons John Cena is over. Their entire act is designed to stimulate the senses of a young, non-cynical mind.

Still, The Usos retain an approval rating that is almost universal. They’re relatively new, so there’s no hipster backlash from wrestling snobs. We don’t hear “Uce…No!” from the jaded pockets of live arenas.

Not yet, at least.

Feuds with the old guard (like The New Age Outlaws, who are real-life friends of Triple H and were seen by some as old wrestlers stealing spotlight from young wrestlers) and bland tag teams like Rybaxel have given fans little reason to go full meta on The Usos.

For much of their championship run, there have been no heel tag teams that could make The Usos look cheesy by comparison.

Then along came The Wyatts.



Luke Harper and Erick Rowan (more Harper than Rowan) take the artfulness of The Wyatts a step further.

Harper cut his teeth in Internet Wrestling Community hotbeds like Japan and Ring of Honor. He works a style more similar to Daniel Bryan than Bruiser Brody. The guy can even do a suicide dive.

Because his immense size makes this ironic, he has become almost as beloved by “smart” fans, who boo babyfaces and cheer heels, as Bray Wyatt himself.

Harper and Rowan, like Bray Wyatt, have a gimmick that is so complex and well thought-out it makes the Uso’s pseudo hip-hop act look like Kris Kross.

With a pair of cool heels to get behind, an Usos feud is finally polarizing.

Sunday’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view emanates from Boston, Massachusetts. Boston is a snarky bunch that refuses to surrender its hardcore credentials long enough to cheer for hometown hero John Cena.

SummerSlam in 2006 was held at that venue. During a match between Cena and Edge, James Caldwell of the Pro Wrestling Torch recounted that “a ‘Cena sucks’ chant started early,” and then “another ‘Cena sucks’ chant could be heard.”

Anti-Cena sentiments have only become more mainstream since.

A 50-50 reaction for the Usos at Money in the Bank, and similar reactions in the future, will render the Usos carbon copies of Cena. For Jimmy and Jey, this can only mean one thing.

Wyatt holds an unconscious Cena in his arms and sings, "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands."

WWE fans had the choice to have John Cena face one, two or three members of The Wyatt Family. They went the sadistic route, pitting him against Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper and Erick Rowan.

Backstage, Wyatt cackled about the bitter taste of truth and his desire for change. He proclaimed that The Wyatt Family stands against Cena.

He also said that he would take Cena's followers from him.

Renee Young later interviewed Cena backstage. He said he respected the WWE Universe while wearing a sad-dog expression. Cena told Wyatt that he should never count him out.

Once the bout began, all three members of the Wyatt clan stomped on Cena. Harper bashed him with forearms and Rowan slammed him before Wyatt danced with him in the ring.

Harper's next turn saw him miss a wild uppercut, after which Cena hit a suplex. His offense didn't last, though.

The Wyatt Family traded chances to use Cena as a punching bag.

Cena fought back with a DDT to Harper. Wyatt came in seething, planting Cena into the mat. "The Eater of Worlds" then took the time to sing to the crowd.

The former champ made an impressive comeback, looking as if he was going to pull out the upset. Harper and Rowan started attacking him rather than let him pin Wyatt. Wyatt cradled Cena's head in his arms as he sang and sneered.

Result: Cena wins via disqualification.



The match impressed even for how one-sided it was, but the real entertainment was the character work. Cena is beginning to seem more resigned in this feud, unhappy that his fanbase is leaning more and more toward Wyatt.

Wyatt showed off a wide range of skills, reciting a dark poem on the mic and unsettling the audience with his odd behavior in the ring.

The image of him holding Cena's head in his arms and singing is one of the best of the year. He and Cena head into Extreme Rules, just as they did at WrestleMania, with a show-stealing story.

Bray Wyatt Must Facilitate a Character Change for John Cena

Bray Wyatt and John Cena are embroiled in a feud that will culminate at WrestleMania 30 when the two men face off one on one.  Bray and his family have targeted Cena for the past few months and in that time, the man known as The Eater of Worlds has attacked John on every level.

But while the angle has been a very interesting one thus far, the fact is that something must give for Cena.  His character has been under fire now perhaps more than he has been in quite some time and if any heel in WWE can facilitate a change for Cena, it's Bray Wyatt.

The reason for that lies in the fact that Bray is the polar opposite of Cena in every way.  And it's the differences that exist between the two men that have made the feud all the more intriguing.

On one side is Cena, the top star in WWE.  He is everything that the company wants: He is a physical specimen, he has the respect of the locker room and most importantly, he sells tickets.  WWE has had so much invested in John and he always delivers when called upon.

His character is that of the clean cut, wholesome protagonist.  John is above reproach, a man that will not bend or break in any situation despite how much the odds may be against him.  He is loyal to his friends as well as his fans and he always makes the right decisions.

On the other side is Bray, a man that is still finding his way in WWE.  He is the kind of antagonist that the company can utilize in so many ways because he is so talented.  Bray has the ability to move the crowd when he speaks, to cause an immediate impact despite what Superstar is in his sights at any given time.

Bray's character is dark and enigmatic, with a twisted way of looking at the world around him.  He is willing to do anything to get what he wants and he leads his family by preying on their insecurities as well as their willingness to give up their individuality to him.



The two men could not be more opposite and if that was not enough, the fact is that Bray's character cares nothing about winning or losing.  So in addition to the differences that exist between them, there also lurks the very present danger of Bray's obsession with Cena which has nothing to do with beating him at WrestleMania.

Bray Wyatt has nothing to lose and that means he is the most dangerous heel that John has faced in quite some time.

The truth is that Bray Wyatt will not stop.  Win or lose at Mania, he will likely not slow down in his efforts to bring WWE's golden idol crashing down for the world to see.  Even though Cena has faced strong opposition in the past, the truth is that Bray is unlike anyone that WWE has ever put before John.

And in a somewhat surprising moment, Cena actually admitted on Raw that he is afraid of Bray Wyatt. Thought the moment was rather fleeting as the program continued to move on, the fact is that it was perhaps the most important moment in the rivalry thus far.


For the first time since he locked horns with Bray, John has admitted weakness.  For any other WWE Superstar, that admission may not be much of a big deal, but for John Cena it could mean everything.

In fact, it could mean the future of his character.  The reason for that is because if Bray continues to get into John's head, then fans could potentially see the character change that they have so desperately wanted for so long.  And if anyone can deliver that, it's Bray Wyatt.

The change in question may not be a heel turn however.  The truth is that WWE may not be ready to turn Cena and that moment may not ever happen at all.  But the change could be even more substantial than that.

From the time he began working as the company's top guy, Cena's character has been constant.  He smiles, he salutes, he cracks corny jokes and he typically always wins much more than he loses.  John basically looks the same now as he did 10 years ago and none of that is likely changing without some huge assistance from an outside force.

That outside force is Bray Wyatt, who could possibly take John's smile away.  He could end the fun and games that John's character enjoys so much and he could even alter Cena's way of thinking as a WWE Superstar.

Bray's lasting effect on Cena could actually sharpen John's focus in the ring.  As Cena watches the main roster fill up with top future prospects like The Wyatts, The Shield, Cesaro and Big E, he could begin seeing his own place slipping away from him.

And instead of laughing it off or chalking it up to the fact that he always wears a target, Cena could actually become more intense.  He could leave behind the clean cut, kind-heart persona that he has become known for and adopt a real killer instinct.

That does not necessarily mean that he would begin cheating in the ring or take cheap shots against another Superstar.  But if the moment called for it, he would be more open to the idea of it than he is right now.

The bottom line is that Cena's character is enduring more mind games and more personal attacks than he maybe ever has.  And if the character change that fans have been wanting for so long is actually going to happen, it could be Bray Wyatt that brings it on.

WWE Raw Result 2/24/14: John Cena Promo

After a quick shoutout to Hulk Hogan, John Cena did his own hyping of the WWE Network. He delivered the same line he's been saying over the past few weeks, discussing how the future of the company would have to come through him.

He brought up Bray Wyatt costing him the Elimination Chamber match and then challenged him to come at him in the ring.

Wyatt and his family obliged, walking to the ring by torchlight. Wyatt ranted about hollow heroes, calling Cena a liar. Cena beckoned the clan to take him on. The three brutes burst under the ropes from three different sides and stomped on the former world champ.



Cena kept fighting, but he had trouble lifting himself on his left leg. Wyatt knocked him down and hovered over him.

The Cena-Wyatt segments are only going to get better once Cena begins to take Wyatt more seriously. He goofed around in the early part of his speech, not yet matching Wyatt's intensity.

Still, Wyatt delivered in the heat of the spotlight. He was captivating and seemed to believe his rhetoric.

Cena brought up his mic game as the segment went on, but he's capable of more. He relied too much on familiar phrases. The tension was plentiful regardless.

This feud and match has the capacity to steal the show at WrestleMania.

WWE Smackdown 2/21/14 Result:Cody Rhodes, Goldust and Rey Mysterio vs. The Wyatt Family

If one thing is clear, it is that WWE has perfected the six-man tag team match formula, and it was once again on display this week as The Wyatt Family defeated Rey Mysterio, Cody Rhodes and Goldust to continue rolling as it heads into Elimination Chamber and what should be a war against The Shield this Sunday night.

The match was solidly wrestled, and the closing moments, as has become the norm for matches of this sort, were wild, chaotic and energetic and really popped the crowd.


The blind tag to Bray Wyatt, which caught Goldust off guard and ultimately led to his demise, was really well done and led to Sister Abigail from Wyatt for the win.

WWE Raw Results 2/17/14 The Wyatt Family vs. Sin Cara and Los Matadores

Erick Rowan made the first impression, colliding with Diego and roaring afterward. Luke Harper and Bray Wyatt piled on, taking turns smashing the bullfighter into the mat.

Diego managed to create some space between him and Harper, tagging Sin Cara in.

The luchador knocked The Wyatt Family around for a few moments. A discus clothesline courtesy of Harper halted that. Wyatt stepped in and added Sister Abigail's Kiss to finish Sin Cara off.

Result: The Wyatt Family win via pinfall.

This was nowhere near as fun as their match from last week's Main Event. It was shorter, more one-sided, but that's because WWE's purpose was to give The Wyatt Family momentum heading into the Elimination Chamber event.

Why choose such a goofy set of opponents then?

Roman Reigns got to dominate Mark Henry, while The Wyatt Family had to settle for bullfighters and a mini bull. The difference in importance of those victories is a chasm.

WWE Elimination Chamber 2014: Best Potential Finishes for the Shield vs. Wyatts

On February 23, World Wrestling Entertainment presents its Elimination Chamber pay-per-view. The night's most anticipated match is the six-man tag team war pitting the company's top two trios against one another.

Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins, The Shield, will do battle with Bray Wyatt, Erick Rowan and Luke Harper, the Wyatt Family, in a match that fans have eagerly anticipated since the two groups came to blows back on the November 11 episode of Raw.

The build to the match has been masterfully crafted as neither group has laid a hand on the other. Instead, the creative team has opted to build anticipation and excitement for the match via intense staredowns and outstanding promos.

Wyatt, in particular, has done some of the best work of his young career in pre-taped promos aired before or after The Shield's matches in recent weeks.

Given the amount of hype surrounding this match, the importance of its finish will be amplified. It can make or break the entire bout, not to mention the booking of everyone involved for weeks and months afterward.

With a few different options at its disposal, the creative team has the opportunity to be a bit choosy with which finishes it takes into consideration.



First and foremost...

The Wyatt Family must win.

With the seeds for a Bray Wyatt versus John Cena match at WrestleMania XXX planted at last month's Royal Rumble when Wyatt interfered in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match between Cena and Randy Orton, it is imperative that the Wyatt Family gains momentum heading into the match.

A loss would set them back significantly and further create doubt that Wyatt has any real shot at defeating Cena at the biggest event of the year.

With that out of the way, here are a look at the best possible finishes for the match.

Wyatts win clean

A clean win for the Wyatt Family over The Shield would be huge for the cult-like trio. It would reestablish them as a threat to the entire WWE, especially following losses to Daniel Bryan and CM Punk to end 2013.

If Wyatt is destined to square off against Cena at WrestleMania, as was hinted at back at Royal Rumble, a clean pinfall victory over someone such as Roman Reigns, who has been booked so dominantly over the last five months, would give him every bit of momentum needed as he embarks on the road to the biggest show (and biggest match) of his blossoming career.

That finish is unlikely, however, because it would destroy everything creative has done to elevate Reigns to the level he is currently at.

Without him being part of the finish, it loses significant impact.



Shield dissension directly fuels Wyatt victory

Most expect that the mounting problems within The Shield will lead to the Wyatt Family's victory on February 23. How it does so remains the question.

One scenario sees the Wyatt Family capitalize on an inadvertent spear from Reigns to Ambrose or a betrayal by Ambrose to pick up the win.

While that would serve the purpose by giving the Wyatts the victory, it would do so in a backhanded fashion.

Rather than portraying the trio as competitors capable of winning the match on their own, they would look like guys who have to directly benefit from dysfunction among their opponents to capture a win.

It's not exactly how one would want one of the potentially more important elements of this year's WrestleMania to look heading into the big show.

Shield dissension indirectly fuels Wyatt victory

The best of the potential finishes for the big six-man tag bout still delivers the storyline aspects of the one prior but does so in a way that allows the victors to look stronger.

Rather than having the Wyatts score a win immediately following the Shield's actual split, this scenario sees the same sort of miscommunication spot between Reigns and Ambrose but does not set up the finish right away.

Instead, Seth Rollins attempts to get his teammates back on the same page before himself falling victim to Wyatt's Sister Abigail and eating the pinfall.

The Wyatt Family wins the match in impressive fashion, the tension between Ambrose and Reigns reaches a boiling point and Rollins, who had done everything in his power to be the glue that held the group together, now has a reason of his own to be fed up with the infighting.

It serves three different purposes without either of the impending feuds for WrestleMania suffering because of it.

That is the very definition of a successful booking decision.

Best Scenarios for Daniel Bryan's Alliance with the Wyatt Family

The Wyatt Family taking Daniel Bryan hostage is both beautiful and scary.

For weeks, we've been teased with a feud between the two. After the intense teasing of Kane joining the family (which would have made sense) and it never happening, I didn't think much of the taunts to Bryan. I figured it was done to kill time in the lull of the holiday period of programming.

However, based on the previous episode of Raw, it seems there is more to the story.

Bryan stumbled to Bray Wyatt like a baby learning to walk. The show went off the air giving you the impression The Wyatt Family has gained a new member.

If this is so, boy, what a way to potentially neutralize the hottest babyface in the company.

Bryan's words on the microphone were interesting. He said how the fans chant “YES” in every arena he goes to, but the machine still won't let him win. The machine being WWE. A true statement which, on one hand, comes off a shoot interview, but on the other, it seems like an intelligent storyline, as it seems someone gave him the green light to say this.

Raw ended, and I thought this was WWE's way to lull the fanfare for Bryan to make audible room for the interest of Batista and other big names returning for WrestleMania season. If this is the case, shame on WWE.

If you have money on the table in Bryan but hold him back due to it not being your idea, that's a big middle finger to the fans and your checkbook.

But I will acknowledge the possibility of this being a setup for a triumphant babyface run for Bryan sending him into WrestleMania against Triple H, Shawn Michaels or dare I say, the WWE Champion. He spends weeks mentally controlled by Wyatt until he escapes and elevates himself to a marquee match at WrestleMania.

If positive supreme booking comes out of this for Bryan, it will be an audible. I firmly believe while this booking of Bryan being brainwashed by the Wyatt's is creative on one level, it's also a slap in the face on another.

Take a look at CM Punk. Some of his recent actions suggest he is not entirely happy with how things are going in the WWE. We know he always shoots the truth at any chance he gets.

His comments on Twitter, which seemed to be connected to the whole AJ Lee/Michelle Beadle situation weeks ago, are a good example of Punk speaking his mind.

How about his comments to the camera on Raw? He's always genuine when he speaks, and his entrance seemed to be no different. He said to the camera, “Everything is falling apart” just before screaming his trademark, “It's clobbering time” when he made his entrance.

Then, after the show ended with Bryan leaving with The Wyatt Family, Punk encouraged the fans to continue with the babyface treatment of Bryan.

To me, it all screams of an opinion from Punk that he sees the ridiculousness in some of WWE's booking, notably Bryan's, and wants to continue to show the powers to be the gem they have in their hands.

This plot with Wyatt could be a way to propel the trio as babyfaces, which they will be successful at eventually, but it shouldn't be right now.

Wyatt currently has Bryan following the buzzards, but he needs to preach to the WWE creative staff to follow the money.

The McMahon Family Is The Best Target For the Wyatt Family

To live up to the hype—the McMahon Family might be the only target big enough for the Wyatt Family.

When we first started hearing that “they're coming” I thought Chris Jericho would be a logical choice for a first feud with the Wyatt Family. Jericho knows how to get anyone over. He can be sympathetic and heroic. He stands for everything the Wyatts seem to be against based on their promos.

Jericho, however, is in a feud with Ryback and is always a scheduling variable with his other ventures, mainly Fozzy.

The Miz is another option for the Wyatts. He's an option because he's a babyface and he has lost a lot of relevancy in the last year, compared to what he once had (main eventing WrestleMania with The Rock and John Cena). However, The Miz can't get himself over as a babyface, and he wouldn't do any good helping get the new attraction of the Wyatts over.

Randy Orton is the third option only because he's just there. He isn't contending for any titles. He won't win Money in the Bank. If he needs something important to do, first Wyatt Family feud is pretty important. But Orton would be a disappointment.

A disappointment because there has been so much hype surrounding the debut. Raw ended last week with a video for them teasing they would debut tonight. USA Network is running commercials during the week promoting the debut.

Forget single babyfaces who should be the first feud. The family that's just as crazy as the Wyatts, just in different ways, could be the best option. The McMahon Family wouldn't be a let down if they were the target of the debut segment. It just so happens, Vince, Stephanie and Triple H are all advertised to appear in the ring at the same time when they give a job evaluation to Vickie Guerrero.

For weeks we've been hearing about sheep in wolves' clothing and fear. Is there anything that makes more sense than the Wyatt Family coming for the rich family that owns WWE?

Not saying it's going to be what happens, but it does seem to be the most exciting.

The Wyatt Family to Debut on Upcoming Raw

Vignettes hyping the Wyatt Family have been airing on WWE programming for the past several weeks and it appears as though the time has finally come for Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper and Erick Rowan to debut. A Wyatt promo actually closed Raw on Monday and the announcers made a point to say that they would be debuting in one week, so there is no question that big things are planned for the up-and-coming stable.

Ever since the first Wyatt Family vignette was shown, WWE fans have wondered how the NXT trio might make their presence felt. Now that the date of the group's debut is known, the only question that remains is how the creative team will choose to utilize it. There are countless possibilities and it is truly anyone's guess at this point as the WWE hasn't provided the slightest clue as to which wrestler or wrestlers the Wyatt Family will target.

As excited as many fans seem to be, just as many are likely apprehensive. While the WWE's on-screen product has been excellent recently, it is no secret that the writers have struggled with effectively debuting and using new talent in the past. As committed as the WWE seems to be to the Wyatt Family, the company has to make sure that the triumvirate makes a strong first impression as that can go a long way toward ensuring future success.

One group that the WWE has treated right is The Shield. The debut of Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns came from out of nowhere, but it was effective as they crashed the Survivor Series main event and instantly targeted Ryback. They have been well protected ever since, and even though they lose matches on occasion now, they are still the most dominant group in wrestling. As for the Wyatts, it will be very difficult for them to make a similar impact to The Shield. With Money in the Bank approaching, it wouldn't really make sense for the Wyatts to zero in on a certain competitor.

With that in mind, the Ring Rust Radio crew agreed that Wyatt will likely cut a promo on Raw, but he won't necessarily target someone until the aftermath of Money in the Bank. One feud that a vocal group of fans seems to be pulling for is the Wyatt Family against The Shield, but that will not happen nor should it. Such a feud makes no sense since both groups are heels and one of the groups would have to come out on a losing end. The focus of the Wyatt Family will be Wyatt as a singles wrestler with Harper and Rowan essentially acting as his heavies.

Graves delivers an vicious kick to Rollins. Rollins quickly recovers and gains momentum. Later Graves fells outside the ring Lumberjacks pushes him back in. Rollins gets a near fall, Rollins apply and scissor lock. Graves breaks it. Rollins still keeps Graves down by using an chin lock. Rollins gains complete control over Graves. Graves builds some momentum by some clothes lines on Rollins. Rollins get outside the ring twice, and was pushed back by the Lumberjacks. The other members of The Sheild Ambrose & Reigns enters and takes out the entire Lumberjacks. Rollins takes advantage and attacks Graver and pins him.

Winner: Seth Rollins.
