Fans had to wait until the very end of the show to find out what exactly was happening with John Cena a day after getting physically abused by Brock Lesanar. It was the final segment of the show and the crowd was told they would find out who his next opponent would be at the next PPV event, Over the Limit.
With rampant speculation overflowing the Internet waves, everyone was shocked when WWE GM John Laurinaitis announced he would face Cena in the ring.
Laurinaitis took a couple of cheap shots on Cena with the help of Lord Tensai, pounding on his injured shoulder that he suffered at Extreme Rules the night before.
If WWE thinks they can sell PPVs on the strength of a match between Cena and a suit, they are nuts. Lord Tensai was out there to help for a reason; he is needed to assist Laurinaitis if the shocking upset is going to occur.
While last night surely brought up memories of Vince McMahon’s epic match against Stone Cold Steve Austin, it’s a slap in the face to the Godfather of the sport to compare the two. Laurinaitis has certainly seemed more comfortable in recent weeks in front of a microphone, but he’s nowhere near the level that McMahon is at.
Tossing in Lord Tensai really juices this feud up. The big goon never speaks, so let Laurinaitis do all the yapping. It is clear WWE is trying to vault the new guy to the next level, and what better way to introduce him to causal fans than to bust him out in a PPV match against the face of the WWE?
Cena would crush Laurinaitis one-on-one, making it seemed forced and boring. Allow Tensai to be involved in the feud on the Monday Night Raw leading up to the PPV match and let him have a big part in the festivities. Not only will Laurinaitis’ profile be raised, but Tensai’s will, too.
It’s a win-win.
