Fandango Engages in Funny Twitter Battle with a Soccer Team

Well, it appears that Fandango-mania has not caught on everywhere.

Everton Football Club did not cater to its fans by playing the much-requested Fandango theme during its football match against the Rangers FC on Saturday.

In case you are unaware, Fandango's theme is doing ridiculous business for iTunes in the UK. It has not only broken through the top 10, but by week’s end, it became the No. 2 most downloaded song overseas.

That being said, the team took to Twitter on Friday with the following message for its fans.

To those WWE wrestling fans who've requested Fandango's theme for tomorrow, we won't be playing it at Goodison. #efcmusic #efc

As soon as the WWE star got wind of this news, he decided to take charge and give his fans what they wanted. Unfortunately, the back-and-forth tweets have since been deleted.
Keep in mind, we are talking about a WWE entrance song that was not produced by a mainstream artist and a star who, up until WrestleMania, hadn’t wrestled a single match. Nonetheless, Fandango has become arguably one of the WWE's most popular wrestlers in less than a week.

Yes, he has been on TV for about a month now, but he really only came out to deny scheduled matches because his name was mispronounced. So it makes you wonder how WWE fans, including myself, got hooked on a persona who is, for all intents and purposes, a pompous ass.

The only thing I can think of is that this is a Vince McMahon creation, and it's not very often that McMahon misses the mark. The fact is, even into his late 60's, he is still arguably the most creative guy working for the WWE.

Yes, he has had his busts, but overall, when it comes to the wrestling biz, he really has his hands on the pulse of what fans want.

Ultimately, WWE needs to capitalize on Fandango's popularity and push him to the hilt before his act becomes stale. Otherwise, the company could very well have another Zack Ryder on its hands, and we all know how well that's working out.

In the end, Everton, in a way, eventually folded and played his theme prior to Saturday's match.

What Could Debuting at Mania Do for Fandango? | WrestleMania 29

It seems like Fandango has been part of the WWE roster for months due to the many vignettes hyping his debut, but he still hasn't wrestled a televised match. That will change when he faces Chris Jericho at WrestleMania XXIX, though, and it could very easily put Fandango on the fast track to stardom.

While Fandango has technically wrestled matches as Johnny Curtis, the Fandango gimmick is totally independent from anything he has done in the past. Because of that, we have to view Fandango as a new character who has yet to compete in his debut match. It is incredibly rare for a superstar to debut at WrestleMania, so Fandango has a golden opportunity to make a great first impression in front of a massive audience.

Fandango has teased wrestling in matches for the past several weeks, but has ultimately declined since nobody has been able to say his name correctly. That is how his feud with Jericho began as well. Fandango interrupted Jericho's promo on Raw, and Y2J proceeded to mock Fandango's name. Fandango then got retribution by attacking Jericho during his match against Jack Swagger on SmackDown.

Their rivalry carried over to the most recent edition of Raw as Jericho attacked Fandango prior to his scheduled match. Y2J then defeated Dolph Ziggler, which led to Fandango returning to the ring to get retribution. Later in the night, Jericho announced that he had spoken with Vickie Guerrero and set up a match against Fandango for WrestleMania XXIX, so it has finally become official after much speculation.

I'm not a big supporter of the match and I'm sure that many fans feel the same way, but there is no use pouting over it. The WWE decided to go in a different direction with Jericho rather than pitting him against somebody like Ziggler, so it's best to look forward. Jericho is one of the greatest performers in the history of the business, and Fandango now has a chance to face him on the grandest stage of them all.

If Fandango doesn't come through with a strong performance, then he could easily flop and never live up to his potential. Jericho has a penchant for elevating others in the ring, though, so Fandango is clearly in an advantageous position. All he has to do is follow Y2J's lead, take care of his own business and continue to advance his character. Not everyone likes the Fandango gimmick, but it has people talking, which is more than can be said for most of the guys on the roster.

With less than two weeks until WrestleMania, there is still time for the WWE to put Fandango in a match prior to the event. That line of thinking is understandable as there is a desire to make Fandango look like a serious threat against Jericho, but putting him in a match isn't necessary. Fandango can simply continue to interfere in Jericho's matches and be like a thorn in his side. That would accomplish much more than any squash match on Raw or SmackDown could.

Fans have gotten a little taste of what Fandango can do in the ring over the past couple weeks, including his top-rope leg drop, but there is no need to give everything away. Part of Fandango's appeal is that it is unclear how capable he is in the ring. The hardcore fans who have seen him as Johnny Curtis probably know what to expect, but the vast majority of fans are still in the dark.

Chris Jericho vs. Dolph Ziggler: March 25, 2013

Most great superstars have made a memorable debut. It isn't always necessary, but everyone remembers The Undertaker debuting at Survivor Series 1990 or John Cena challenging Kurt Angle out of nowhere. Having Fandango beat Jericho in his first match at WrestleMania would be astronomically more impactful than a win over The Great Khali or Yoshi Tatsu, so there is plenty of incentive to save him for 'Mania.

It isn't fair to call Fandango a career mid-carder or a jobber right now since he hasn't even had his first match yet. That is why I'm willing to reserve judgment until after his encounter with Jericho. If he fizzles and doesn't resonate with the fans, then maybe there is something to the criticism he has received. If comes up big and puts on a great show, though, perhaps his ceiling is a lot higher than most initially thought.

Fandango's talent was evident when he wrestled as Johnny Curtis, but he obviously needed a gimmick with some substance. The Fandango character appears to have provided him with precisely that. Now that he has been given the tools and the opportunity needed to succeed, all he needs to do is lock up with an all-time great at the biggest event of the year.

Maybe the pressure will be too much for Fandango to handle, but the WWE will never know unless it affords him a chance. I'm willing to bet that Fandango will make the most of his opportunity, so it will be up to the writers to utilize him correctly moving forward. That is far from a guarantee, but a good start should go a long way toward making Fandango a success in the WWE.

What to Expect from WWE's Newest Potential Superstar Fandangoo

If you saw a vignette on Monday's edition of RAW touting a new superstar named Fandangoo and were a bit confused, then you certainly weren't alone. Despite everything going on with CM Punk, Ryback and John Cena, Fandangoo is suddenly the talk of WWE due to the mystery surrounding him.

According to ProWrestling.net, Fandangoo is a new gimmick that will be played by Johnny Curtis, as he has been testing it out at house shows as of late. It's unclear exactly what the character will entail, but he appears to be a tango dancer or something similar.

WWE's immediate plans for Fandangoo are unclear, but I'm willing to give it a chance.



While the prospects of a tango-dancing wrestler reminds me very much of Disco Inferno, perhaps Curtis will put an entertaining spin on it. He hasn't been featured much on RAW or SmackDown, but Curtis did win the fourth season of NXT and has a fairly engaging personality.

With that said, I do find the WWE's infatuation with dancing gimmicks strange.

We already have a Funkasaurus in place in the form of Brodus Clay, so throwing Fandangoo into the mix seems odd. The creative team doesn't seem too interested in Clay anymore since he has lost the vast majority of his matches as of late, however, I can't help but think that he's a better option than Curtis.

Regardless, it wouldn't be surprising to see Fandangoo either feud or team with Clay. If that is the case, though, it may be tough for the Fandangoo gimmick to get over. The WWE doesn't even put enough time into the mid-card to generate a proper feud for United States Champion Antonio Cesaro, so I doubt it will give a lower-card character like Fandangoo the tools to succeed.

In a lot of ways, the idea of Fandangoo brings me back to 1995 when each and every guy on the roster had to have a gimmick no matter how ridiculous it was. While there were normal guys like Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart, most mid-carders seemed to have an occupation such as a plumber, a garbage man, a dentist, a pirate and everything in between.

I have a soft spot for that era of wrestling since it's what I was first drawn to as a kid, but I'm not sure that type of stuff can work in the present day. Clay proved that fans will get behind a dancing gimmick as he was red hot for a while, but I feel like a big part of that had to do with the shock factor of him returning as a happy-go-lucky Funkasaurus rather than the monster heel most people were expecting.

Curtis wasn't used on television enough for casual fans to form any sort of opinion on him, so I doubt that he'll get the initial pop that Clay did. Curtis is fighting an uphill battle with this Fandangoo gimmick because he'll have to go from jobber to being over quite quickly.

If he doesn't, then I would be surprised to see it get scrapped in short order.

I will say that the WWE is bringing him along the right way and nurturing the Fandangoo gimmick the best way it can. When the Ryback character first started making appearances in squash matches at house shows, every savvy fan knew that it was Skip Sheffield from Nexus.

Skip was essentially considered a bottom-of-the-barrel guy prior to his injury, but Ryback generated some buzz and fans supported it.

I'm not sure that the Fandangoo gimmick will work on the same level as Ryback, though, because it can't be taken seriously. When you look at Ryback, it's easy to buy into him as a main-event guy who can beat anyone. Fandangoo, on the other hand, can't possibly be anything more than a mid-carder, even if he miraculously gets over without a problem.

Even if Fandangoo's ceiling is relatively low, though, he has great potential as a comedic gimmick. I'm hoping that he gets a valet like Rosa Mendes or someone from FCW. That way, they can dance down to the ring and get the fans interested.

I'd also love to see Fandangoo do a spot where he tries to dance with his opponents, only for them to turn him down.

Fandangoo certainly won't be rivaling gimmicks like "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, The Rock or The Undertaker in this lifetime, but it's better to try something new than to let a talented guy like Curtis sit around and do nothing.

Because of that alone, I look forward to seeing what the WWE does with it.
