The night opened with Big Johnny Laurinaitis bringing out Lesnar to the delight of the crowd in attendance. Brock said he was brought in by John Laurinaitis, a man he respects.
This seemed to get some of the fans to start booing Lesnar, but there was more to come. As Cena came to the ring it was clear the crowd was split on him, like usual.
Cena came in and said to Lesnar "I never got to thank you for last week," and proceeded to slap the taste out of Brock's mouth. An angry Lesnar pounced on Cena immediately.
The brawl forced the locker room to empty, with superstars trying to hold back the two powerhouses, but it was not enough, as the two broke free from the men holding them back several times to lock up again.
Cena ended up getting busted open in the melee and Lesnar left without a scratch on him, but Cena was a man and stood up to Lesnar by walking right up to him and giving him the five-finger greeting.
Later in the evening Cena was facing David Otunga, who he beat rather decisively, when Lesnar came out and gave Cena a low blow from behind, which upset the crowd that had welcomed him back with open arms.
Most of the crowd seemed to be booing by the time Brock threw Cena on his shoulders and delivered the second F5 Cena has received in as many weeks.
With Cena struggling to get the whole audience on his side, this could end up being exactly what he needs. Despite Brock being brought back in with a hugely positive reaction from the crowd it has to be mentioned that there is one thing he is very good at—creating heat.
When he was in WWE, he was very easy to hate because he appeared to be the bully everyone dealt with in middle school and he continued to develop heat while in UFC.
When he first went to UFC he came off as a heel, which is something you don't see in MMA, but when Lesnar talked there were a lot of people who just did not like him.
Taking a cheap shot at Cena and attacking him from behind is a good way to generate heat and create sympathy for the man who just lost the biggest match of his career.
If WWE continues to build this feud with Brock playing the overly aggressive, cocky heel and Cena playing the guy who just doesn't give a damn, then it could end up being a more important feud to Cena's image than his feud with Rocky.
It is yet to be seen if their match at Extreme Rules will have any kind of extreme stipulation, but if I had to guess, I would say these two would be locking up in either a steel cage or in a chairs match.
A submission match is also possible, seeing as Lesnar has the MMA background and Cena employs the STF on a regular basis to get wins, but the more likely scenario is a stipulation which allows them to go all out and have a real brawl the likes of which The Rock could not provide.
We do not yet know if Brock will be wrestling in any matches between now and Extreme Rules, but with the event just a few weeks away he may not need to.
By having Cena and Lesnar have fight after fight, week after week, without any real matches taking place, it could help to build the tension leading into what I am sure will be the biggest match on the Extreme Rules card.
Lesnar's return has brought about mixed feeling from fans. Some say he is a welcome addition to the roster, while others think he is adding nothing special at all.
One thing that is undeniable is that he brings attention to the WWE, and as the saying goes, "Any press is good press."
The best thing would be to have Lesnar continue to play the aggressor who is also taking the low road and attacking Cena from behind; that way, when the match does finally happen, Cena will be able to have a more positive reaction than he had in his match with Rocky.
The only factor that could affect this is the Chicago crowd. The Windy City is known for being a very vocal and volatile crowd who will cheer whoever it damn well pleases, and this could bring about a negative response for Cena.
Hopefully WWE does a decent job of generating enough heat for Lesnar over the next few weeks where it won't matter, but only time will tell.
What do you think? Will Brock Lesnar help generate some more fan support for Cena?
