Stardust Gimmick Is Smart Change of Direction for Cody Rhodes

Last night on Raw, the latest development in the Cody Rhodes-Goldust saga came out of nowhere: Goldust's new partner is Stardust, or Cody using one of their father's nicknames while dressed up as a cross between Starman from Pro Wrestling for the Nintendo Entertainment System and Goldust.

After a bit of a losing streak for both the Rhodes brothers and then Goldust with a number of temporary partners, the new team made quick work of Rybaxel when Stardust used Masato Tanaka's old Diamond Dust (get it?) finisher to pick up the win.

For months now, it seemed like everything was leading to Cody turning on Goldust.  That could still be the plan, but WWE has a few ways it can go now.

Before we get into whether or not he'll turn, there's the question of how long this will last.  Stardust having new custom entrance music and a new custom outfit makes me think that regardless of the planned end point, this isn't just going to last a couple weeks.  It would be an odd way for the company to invest its resources.  One-offs like Damien Sandow's parade of recent gimmicks often use generic stock music, but Stardust came out to a new, space-themed interpolation of Goldust's entrance song.

So with that in mind, I don't see a scenario where this ends in a few weeks.  So, what's next?

I see WWE testing the waters: Let it breathe for a while.  See how the crowds react.  If they eat it up, keep it going.  If they don't, Cody turns heel on his brother for turning him into a clown show and they finally feud with each other.  If you keep it going, you eventually turn Cody but only when it's the right time.

Then again, does Cody Rhodes really have a future as a heel?

"Dashing" Cody Rhodes, especially once he was "disfigured," was, while good in the ring, a terribly stilted promo as a heel.  It was a bad impression of Dr. Doom where he overacted all the time.  Regular "Dashing" Cody Rhodes wasn't much better.  As much as I want to see a Cody Rhodes vs. Goldust feud in and of itself, I don't want to see Cody go on an extended heel run.  I just don't see him going anywhere.

He may very well be better off with Stardust catching on.  As good as Goldust is, he's 45 years old.  He's going to slow down sooner or later.  Cody could be groomed to be his successor of sorts, and I don't see Cody doing well if he's not tied to Goldust in some form.

If this does lead to a Cody-Goldust feud, I'd rather Cody turn back to being a babyface at the end.  He's a much better babyface than he is a heel, and I like the idea of the family being stronger after the storyline is over.

Either way, I'm curious to see where this goes.  What does everybody else think?
