Nigel McGuinness has reflected on his remarkable return to professional wrestling and explained why every opportunity to compete in the ring now feels particularly meaningful.
For years, McGuinness believed his wrestling career was finished. After stepping away from active competition, the former Ring of Honor and independent wrestling standout had accepted that his days as an in-ring performer were probably behind him.
That changed when All Elite Wrestling gave him an opportunity to return.
McGuinness made his first wrestling appearance in more than a decade at AEW All In 2024 at Wembley Stadium in London. Competing in the Casino Gauntlet, the appearance marked an emotional return to the ring in front of his home-country fans.
The moment eventually led to further opportunities, including another match at this year's All In, where McGuinness faced Jon Moxley.
Speaking about his return, McGuinness explained that he feels fortunate every time he gets the opportunity to wrestle. Having previously believed his career was over, the chance to compete again has changed the way he approaches professional wrestling.
During his active career, McGuinness was always looking toward the next challenge. Like most professional wrestlers, he was focused on what would come next and what he needed to accomplish.
Now, however, he approaches wrestling from a completely different perspective.
McGuinness knows that the final stage of his career is approaching, and that knowledge has made him appreciate each appearance more than he did during his younger years.
He also credited AEW President Tony Khan for giving him the opportunity to return to the ring. According to McGuinness, Khan showed respect for him as an in-ring performer and trusted him with opportunities that he never expected to receive again.
Wembley Stadium has therefore become particularly important in McGuinness' career. The venue represented the location of his emotional return and has since become a place where he has been able to create new memories.
For a wrestler who once believed his career was completely finished, being able to walk through the curtain at Wembley again represents far more than simply another match.
It is a reminder that in professional wrestling, opportunities can sometimes return when they seem impossible.
For McGuinness, every one of those opportunities is now something to appreciate.
