Prior to the Royal Rumble pay-per-view in late January of 2014, many wrestling fans were suspecting a return from Chris Jericho, as he was in Pittsburgh, the location of the event, the weekend of the Royal Rumble. However, as fans watched the event in addition to the weeks of WWE programming following it, it was apparent that Chris Jericho would not be making a return to WWE for WrestleMania season, like he did in 2013.

The latest edition of Wrestling Observer Newsletter provided an update on why Jericho did not make a return to the company. In the edition, it was noted that there had been talk of Jericho returning for the early months of 2014, during late 2013, but nothing came from it. Apparently issues with creative led to the two sides not being able to reach a deal, not financial issues, which some previously expected.

Jericho’s latest appearance on WWE programming was on the July 19 edition of “WWE Smackdown.” He was written off after being attacked by Ryback and Curtis Axel after Axel had retained his Intercontinental Championship in a match against “Y2J.”
