As a wrestling fan for over 20 years, I've witnessed many famed interviews. Men like "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, " Stone Cold" Steve Austin and Hulk Hogan often vocalized their disdain for opponents in believable ways. They made enthusiasts want to buy the upcoming matches on pay per view. That is why they are so revered. Those men sold tickets and pay per views. Tonight, Brock Lesnar's vulgar promo on WWE Raw came off legit and sold the pay per view match as a can't-miss event. He proved himself to be one of the best in the business today. In the span of a couple of minutes, Brock Lesnar was able to create interest in one of the WWE's least celebrated pay per views. These minor events, like Extreme Rules, often draw smaller buys and are merely constructed as a higher profile episode of WWE Raw. But the realistic promo that Lesnar produced tonight made it feel like there was a good chance that something authentic might happen at Extreme Rules. Not since Survivor Series 1997 and the Montreal Screwjob has something felt so genuine.
This is the kind of emotion World Wrestling Entertainment needs to consistently create in order to sell their pay per views. It creates an emotion that maybe Lesnar will "mistakenly" break John Cena's nose. Or, even if a bone doesn't break, fans know there will be a little more intensity behind every punch thrown. It just has a sentiment of legitimacy that has been lacking from pro wrestling for a long time. John Cena, for his part, was equally intense and believable. Cena appeared before the live London audience later in the evening to address Lesnar's pre-taped message.
I envision I am not the only wrestling buff who was impressed by the exceptional promo. It was a reminder of what an impressive and spirited athlete the beast Brock Lesnar actually is. The Extreme Rules event on April 29th will likely be far more intense than the typical monthly diminutive pay per view.
